for once, my 3 year olds tantrums are like music to my ears ;)
My 2 year old opens the door for EVERYONE- sometimes he runs outside for the fun of it! Well, we have double doors and so normal baby proofing locks would not work. This was literally the only thing I could find in all of my researching! My husband was happy that this device was easy to install, and because you use the existing screws of the deadbolt, there is no damage to your door, and once your tot gets old enough to not run outside whillie neelie, you can easily just remove the mount lock. That my family thinks about it: My husband says it is a pain. He doesn't like having to unlock a lock, but is super thankful that our son isn't running in the street. My 6 year old dislikes it because she cant answer the door anymore- something that I never approved of in the first place. Thankfully we haven't had any dangerous solicitors yet! My 6 year old understands how it works, but it is physically too hard for her to open. My 3 year old....well he HATES it. He throws a crying fit every time he tries to open it- which, frankly, makes me love this thing even more ;) I think of it like hes saying "Oh mommy, thank you for loving me so much to want to protect me from strangers and cars so I may live to be an adult!" although, he is usually screaming "I hate this thing its stupid!!!" I adore this lock! I admit, it is a tricky pain sometimes and took a while for me to even open it. you almost need 2 hands and a good amount of arm strength to do it. I know my kids are upset they cant open the door, and my husband thinks it is one of those love hate relationships; however, my kids safety is priority number 1 to me. Of course, you do need to take into consideration if there were an emergency in the house- the kids cant escape. I try to explain to my kids that in an extreme emergency like fire, it is ok and they have my permission to break a window, so make sure to do that if. man, I love this thing! Update: I received this product in March, and now it's almost October. The great news is that this thing is still a pain to open, so my kids don't run into the street. However, I will note that the plastic parts are becoming more difficult to turn and open, and sometimes they will stick and it can be frustrating to open the door. The plastic is also shaving off from rubbing against itself, which I suspect is why the knob becomes more difficult to turn. I probably open the door between 6-12 times a day? My 6 year old whom was once semi-easily able to open the door now can not because it has become too difficult from the parts being hard to turn- which is fine, but if there were an emergency and she had to get out of the house would be an issue, but my hubby or I am home all the time, so it wouldn't be an issue for us, but possibly for someone else wanting to purchase this lock? To be frank, I purchased this product expecting for it not to last a super long time- I mean, the parts are plastic and eventually my tot has to learn not to open the door and run in the street, right? The deadbolt lock has still met and exceeded my expectations, I just expect to get a new one for my next child in a few years. If you are say, a nursing home or in care of an elderly, you should know you may have to invest in a new deadbolt cover annually or bi-annually. honestly, it is the only option I could find for double doors. I love that this deadbolt cover was super easy to install and has done zero damage to my door or the handle. I still love it, am pleased with my purchase, and recommend it :)

very good
easy to install. does its job as intended. toddler hates it but me and his father now have a peace of mind that he wont be unlocking or opening the door as he can't unlock it now with this on . great for safety and peace of mind with smart littles. we have the doorknob things on all the other doors and they work great but the front door we couldn't get one to fit so once he figured out the deadbolt lock we immediately bought this . its easy for adults to use and impossible for my toddler. durable and fits well. will be easy to remove when we move. definitely a good value for what i paid.

Particular about placement, but when there are no better options, it does a great job actually.
Our toddler very quickly figured out how to undo the deadbolt on our front door, and the lock on the lower handle is broken. So the slightest push on our front door and it goes flying open unless the deadbolt stays locked. Having a flight of stairs going up to our front door, I'm sure you can imagine the potential danger of a little one shoving open the door and tumbling down. Because of the type of door we have, the way it swings outward instead of in, and the fact that we are in a rental (aka- no permanent screws or fixtures) this left nearly no options for baby-proofing our front door. This was our only plausible, affordable option, so I took the plunge and tried it out. It was relatively easy to install. I did it by myself while my husband was at work the day it arrived because I was anxious to have it installed. The only real trouble was that I had to unscrew the entire fixture a good 15 times to readjust it and get it placed EXACTLY right on the lock so that it would function properly and unlock the door. So it's not that it's particularly difficult to install, so much as the fact that you have to get the placement juuuuuuuust right or else you have to take the entire thing apart again to try again. Once I had the placement just right, it worked wonders though. There is absolutely no way a young child could undo this lock. I'll admit that even I had a bit of difficulty until I got used to using it. (I had to two hand it for the first day or two. Granted, I am a very small woman and have tiny, children's hands, and our front door has to be tugged just right to unlock even WITHOUT a child lock on it. So blame my anatomy and our cheap housing for that I think. My husband can one hand this lock easily sooooo.) Now that it's been installed for a few weeks and we've adjusted, it's been an absolute lifesaver. I love not having to worry about little ones falling out the front door or going out alone. I also love that when we finally move we can just remove it and bring it with us. It will definitely be coming along with us when we do.

So happy with this product!
I was on the hunt for something that I could use to keep my 2 toddlers from continually running out of the front door anytime I left the room. We have used "childproof" doorknob covers on every door in our house and, up until recently, that was good enough. However, my 2 and 3 year olds have recently figured out that they just need to work together to pull on these and they break apart and allow them access to any room (or outside). Nightmare! We have a metal front door and, to be honest, we didn't want to drill more holes. We also needed a product that would keep the kids in while allowing other family members to be able to get in the house as well. This does the trick! It arrived today and I was able to very easily install this in about 3 minutes. There are 2 tricks to this. Once you loosen the screws on the deadbolt and slide the metal panel behind it, barely tighten the screws of the deadbolt. This way, you can test to make sure that the cover fits over the deadbolt and is in the correct position. If it doesn't fit, then just move the metal panel over a bit until it works for your deadbolt. Then tighten those screws. The second trick is to not over tighten the tiny screws once the top piece is on. This makes it impossible to turn the deadbolt at all. Honestly, it's not the easiest way to get in and out of the house- but it certainly wouldn't make you burn in a fire because it took you 15 extra seconds. It's kind of like a puzzle that, I hope and pray, my little "angels" won't be able to figure out for quite some time now. PS. It really doesn't' look all that bad either. I have a white front door, which helps. But it's not an eyesore.

Easy install, Too easy for kids to figure out.
Super easy to install! Got it because my 3yo keeps trying to elope and we are renting currently and didnt want to drill into the door/doorframe. Because the simplicity of the lock? She figured out the mechanics of how it opens within 30secs. The only thing preventing her from doing so is she is too short/hands too small to push both buttons and turn at the same time. If she grabs a chair? She is smart enough to unlock it with enough time to figure it out. My 6yo walked up and with one hand unlocked it first try. Which is both a blessing and a curse. Emergency? Yay, she can get out! If she is a partner in crime and aiding and abetting escaping sister? Absolutely pointless. I hate how expensive these were and how easy it is to unlock for older kiddos. Would not recommend for parents trying to keep their autistic kiddos from eloping! Will update if my 3yo figures it out. May just need to to drill into door frame for a lock higher up on the door.

Buy this one
This is great. Not worried about my 2 year old wandering outside. Easy installation. You don't have to drill holes in your door so when your little gets old enough just remove it. Great product.

Must be hit or miss, but was a complete miss for me
I have purchased and used many other Safety 1st products and have been very satisfied, so I assumed this would fit my needs for my new problem of securing my deadbolt from my child. However, it failed to meet the mark in every regard. First, the clear plastic cover was scraped up upon receipt. Unless someone returned this and very cleverly taped the box shut, this was a manufacturing defect. Nevertheless, I followed the instructions for installation, but encountered multiple issues. The instructions say to install the backplate a certain way and then add the front piece with the logo at the bottom. However, this orientation failed to allow the product to turn my lock successfully. The instructions then say that if it's not working (like in my case), unscrew everything, fiddle around with the the mounting plate, and try again. I found this instruction to be quite vague, as well as indicative of poor design. I had to unscrew and re-screw everything multiple times before it could work at all, and the trial-and-error nature of the installation felt unnecessarily frustrating for a product marketed as “simple 3-step install” right on the front of the packaging. So, I finally thought I had this installed and went to testing it to ensure that it would child-proof my lock while allowing adults to use it freely. However, I found that it could not “grab” my turn piece consistently, leading to the product “locking up” and getting stuck. I’d estimate that it worked about 25% of the time. In a real scenario, this makes it likely that I would not be able to open my door, which is unacceptable. Perhaps other turn pieces of varying sizes work better, but mine is not unique and I expect that it should work. I also encountered the spring mechanism getting stuck multiple times, indicating to me yet another manufacturing or overall product defect. Knowing that this product was not going to work for me, I went to remove it. The product touts that it “leaves your door with no marring after removal.” However, that is not the case. While it does not screw into your door or use an adhesive, the back metal mounting plate did in fact leave marks on my door. The metal plate is quite rough, so expect it to scratch your paint, especially if you need to adjust it for any reason during installation. I found that this product failed on all accounts, but most importantly, it just did not do the one thing it was supposed to do, which was to allow my deadbolt turn piece to still function after installation.

Works great if it fits your lock!
First things first, will it fit? That depends on the type of deadbolt you have. A few other reviewers have made comment with their brand of lock and tried to explain why it wouldn't work but in a nutshell, this thing works by fitting over your lock. If you look at the picture you can see two gray sections jutting out from the side. The way this works is by squeezing both of those in which act like little flippers to sort of grab and/or push the deadbolt. In order for this to work, you need to have a lock with a switch that is symmetrical (same length on both sides) or is only a little bit longer on one edge than the other. If the lock switch is too long on one side and/or not long enough on the other, these flippers will not be able to grab it. In our case, we had one that was not symmetrical but it was close enough to still work just fine. Setup was easy - just loosened the screws to the plate holding the lock in place, slid the mounting plate for this behind it, re-tightened and then screwed the cover onto the mounting plate. The first time around things weren't perfectly aligned so we needed to back up a few steps and re-adjust. My suggestion would be to test it before fully screwing the cover into place. We love this because unlike those snap on things (also made by Safety 1st) for the door handles, this is something our toddler can't simply snap off. The actual process for getting it to work is impossible for him to do (unlike some of the other ones sold on here that end up being easier for kids than adults) and actually takes a little bit of practice to do smoothly for adults so as his hand gets bigger, we feel confident that this will still be of value. Since this doesn't use a sticky tape or glue, we don't have to worry about it getting pulled off and because there were no permanent alterations made to the door or the frame (no drilling or nailing!), when the time comes to remove this, it should appears as if nothing had ever been there. Overall, we are very happy with this purchase!

Definitely recommend!
This was a literal life saver for us. My 2 year is an escape artist. This works well, it took a bit of getting used to for us big people, but unlike other options, even when hedge watch how we used it he still couldnt make it work. It's a bit expensive, but worth every penny. Prior to this we had caught him strolling down the street a few times!

Worth the price
I really like this product. I searched for so long for a way to be able to childproof the door and be able to have it still be secured after hubby went to work in the morning. This was the only thing I could find that did what I wanted it to do and I wasn’t thrilled about the price but thinking about it, there’s no price I wouldn’t pay to be able to help keep my child safe. So I got it. I don’t know if my lock was just weird or what but I had to rotate the plate for the child proof lock which wasn’t a big deal just a few trial and errors testing to see if my door would unlock all the way. But overall I’m quite happy with it and now I don’t have to worry about my son trying to sneak outside

Horribly flawed - More of a danger than a security
Horribly flawed device, and an utter pain to attempt several hopeless micro adjustments to its alignment. This device cannot in any way be aligned to my deadbolt. Utterly useless. Look elsewhere for ANY other alternative. The 'inner blockers' entirely impede rotation of the device, no matter much much I messed with its alignment for over an hour. It has far too narrow a window in which it MAY conceivably work. If you somehow got this aligned as desired, there is an additional concern; the device can be quite easily forced by hand out of alignment once installed. If someone managed to do this, it becomes a severe safety HAZARD (trapping people insude/outside), rather than the safety it is to provide. At this point, if I were to eventually get this properly installed, for this reason alone I would STILL not trust, or advise anyone to use this. Overpriced as well, but I really needed something. This apparently was not the answer though. (Insult to injury - The deadbolt screws were stripped, so a locksmith had to install a new one, so that I could even attempt this in the first place.)
