Beside a Burning Sea

Beside a Burning Sea, is an incredible book of love, hope, and war. Wow! It is a beautiful story told during the First World War. An Island of love, and hope. The way this story is told makes me think of my father, and his time in The Peleliu Islands!! John Shors is an incredible story teller, writer of love stories, and hope!!! Thank you, John!!!

First, I really like John Shors. I enjoyed the other books he's written. I'm sorry; but this one just bored me to tears, and I even committed the unpardonable act of skimming. If you want to read Shors at his best, I'd recommend "Temple of a Thousand Faces," or "Unbound."

John Shors was a new to me author. BESIDE A BURNING SEA was my August selection for my church book club. We have read a lot of books about WWII during the ten years we have been together, but most have been about the war in Europe. It was interesting to read and discuss a novel that focused on the Pacific side of the war.The use of haikus at the start of each chapter lent an even more emotional impact to the plot.

For some reason, I couldn't wait to get back to the story, even though I tend not to like that kind of narrative where at the discretion of the author, inner thoughts of each character are expressed from an outside observer point of view rather than from one perspective. I don't think this book comes up to the quality of Shors' masterpiece, Beneath the Marble Sky.

In fashion with John Shors style and abilities, this book will prove to be yet another of your faves I'm sure! If you love fiction, if you love anything romantic, if you love anything that can bring history to life.. you will love this author and this book!Beside a Burning Sea is an amazing tale of a medical ship that is hit by Japanese fighter planes because it's thought that it contained "illegal" war items along with their passengers they are trying to save. The few people left alive to find their way to land weave an amazing tale of passion, heartache, and so much more!Seriously, John Shors has once again made his story come to life and fill your world with amazement in his style! This book will NOT disappoint!

I thought Shors had an AMAZING grasp on emotions without going overboard. I thoroughly enjoyed his book!!!

Liked it enough to order more of his books. I like the way he sets them in historical context... usually a historical situation I am not very familiar with so can read without being critical... just enjoy the plots, characters and twists...

This is another riveting novel that tells of survivors of a bombing of a Navy ship in the Pacific during WW II and how they all handle being on an island together. I really enjoyed it.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time! Liked it so much I ordered all his others!
