Northern Money, Southern Land: The Lowcountry Plantation Sketches of Chlotilde R. Martin

Insightful and informative look at how Northern Money during the Depression helped save History of many Southern Plantations
This book gives a clear idea of history of these plantations, antebellum into twentieth century, including pictures across the years. It updates earlier articles cited. It includes a majority of plantations and organized by county. Each county section is introduced with a map. I had borrowed this book earlier and read most of it, but it was such a great read of this Lowcountry area of South Carolina that I purchased my own copy from Amazon. This book has been basis for a number of lectures in the Lowcountry by leading historians.

Wow. I kept looking at this book and then kept moving on as I was not certain if this made sense for me. Finally, after reading about Hobcaw Barony, I made the decision to buy this book. The purchase was a great decision and for those of you interested in the history of architecture and the hunting preserves/winter retreats of the northern rich then add this to your collection. A great read and wonderful history.

Becoming a South Carolinian
Northern Money, Southern Land is a must read book for any "newcomer" to the Lowcountry. Having just moved from a metropolitan city and being challenged by the vast amount of space/distance between residential areas and businesses (pharmacies, markets, and department stores), I have had a struggle in accepting "why" has modernization not occurred more rapidlly in this area of the country. Well, just read the book and you, too, will be so enamored with Lowcountry living that you will want to celebrate it's history, it's roots, and an ultimate preservation of history.
