Don't buy this!
I don't know how this thing was digitized but it doesn't make any sense as you read it. I bought this thinking it was a cheap version of Treasure Island and I would save a couple of bucks but I had to buy the penguin classic anyway because this is not an accurate copy of the book. For example; in the first pages it mentions a "sword reduce" ??? In the real version I saw that this is a "sword cut". "Sixteen men on the dead man's chest" from the original, came out as "sixteen men on a no longer living man's chest" I don't know how anyone could offer a book like this for sale, please don't waste your money like I did.

Not the real text--reads like a computer translation.
This is a defective version. It reads like a computer translation from a different language. It has "the brown old seaman with the saber reduce" instead of the original "the brown old seaman with the saber cut," and"I consider him as if it had been the day past," where the original says, "I remember him as if it had been yesterday." Almost every sentence has phrases that hardly make sense. This should be removed from Amazon.

Things should be up front when they aren't the original text
This is abridged, I'd rather read the original, with translations like joules verne not reading the original is fine, but I'd like to know which translation, because some of them are notoriously bad.

Amazon shamed itself by selling this crap
Divide my 1 star rating by 10 to get a more accurate review. This e-book is written as though Treasure Island was not originally written in English and had to be translated, possibly through multiple languages: Chinese to Swahili to Russian to Welsh to English. It was very difficult to read and understand the story, which I had never before read. Words were misused or thrown in for some reason. "Changed" is added out of context numerous times, so provides no meaning or benefit. Long John Silver was hired as the cook, but the word cook was not used. Instead, the term was "prepare dinner". LJS was labeled the "sea prepare dinner". These goofy bits were, however, not the worst, since about 1/3 of the novel was not even included. Chapters 11 through 19 don't exist in this POS. I could have paid less for a different e-book, but decided to pay a little more with the hope that it would be slightly better than the cheap ones. I ended up buying a paperback copy at the thrift store so I could read the story. Shame on the publisher and Amazon! How about a refund?

interesting but iffy
it kept me wanting to read and see what happened so it was good but it was like a story told by a child. as children do it focused on the fun and dramatic without much towards structure, continuity, or clarity. there were small irritations like unnecessarily roundabout ways of saying things or adding unnecessary, or leaving out helpful, explanations. there were also bigger issues like being so confusing it became necessary to me to skip whole pages to get back to something coherent and the characters changing personalities to move the plot (i don't mean being two-faced, i mean like an excellent liar suddenly being a bad liar). Also it is of course an old book and certain things wouldn't, shouldn't, be said now. Lastly, i wanna say jim is neither clever nor manly, whatever the characters might say, he is only stupidly LUCKY. The book has something on nearly every page happen by extraordinary luck and I get the feeling if Jim had merely sat himself on his butt for the duration of the tale it still would have happened.P.s. Disney did it better, i really wanna watch Treasure Planet now.

Pick up this classic and be brought into an exciting adventure story.
Although I'm not lacking for reading material I decided that it's important to read some of the 'classics' of literature to see how they stack up for the modern reader. Much of Robert Louis Stevenson's <em>Treasure Island</em> has become standard pirate lore in modern media. They way we think of a pirate - how they talk, what they sing ("Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum"), how they behave, maps with treasure marked by an 'X' - comes almost exclusively, still, from this book.Young boy Jim Hawkins encounters a man, old Billy Bones, at the Admiral Benbow Inn in England. Billy Bones tells young Hawkins to keep an eye out for a one-legged scoundrel (Long John Silver). With that moment, Hawkins is pulled into a dangerous adventure.Bones is attacked by former shipmates and dies (of a stroke) a short time later. The shipmates attack the lodge, but Hawkins and his mother have already taken the pirate's map from Bones' belongings and made their escape from the inn. Jim shares the map with some local respectable men, who decide to seek this treasure and take Jim on as a cabin boy.On the island where the treasure should be buried, Jim encounters Ben Gunn, a former shipmate of the dreaded pirate who buried the treasure they now seek. Jim navigates the rough world of the pirate life while trying to remain a good, solid young man despite Silver's taking him under his wing. And when the treasure chest is found and the chest is empty, Jim, and Silver, face a mutinous crew ready to kill the leader and his protected boy.So often we find literature from this era to be a bit dry and difficult to read due to our changes in reading habits and styles of writing, but this book holds up incredibly well. It moves along swiftly and is quite exciting to read. This can still be considered a page-turner as we can't wait to find out what happens next to Jim along his journey. This is definitely highly recommended.Looking for a good book? If you think you can't read that 'old stuff' because it's slow reading, then pick up this classic, <em>Treasure Island</em> by Robert Louis Stevenson, and be brought into an exciting adventure story.

Good book. Not for everyone
Hi, I am nine and therefore my review might not be very helpful. Treasure Island is a story about a boy aboard a ship, searching for Captain Fint's lost treasure.RATING:Lenghth: I am a fast reader and it took me less than a week to finish. I think the average time to finish it is one week.Language : It did not have any swear words in it and is reatively easy to understandEnjoyment: It depends whether you can bear some boring parts. I would stick with it because the ending is interesting and it is a good bookOverall Rating: 4.5/5 stars. A bit boring but very interesting, fun and as I like pirates an AWESOME book. Not for everyone though

A good one
"YO-HO-HO AND A BOTTLE OF RUM"I could go about writing a long review about these delightful stories from the past. But, the idea of boring people right through the review isn't why reviews are written for, first of all. Trust me reading some books as these in the adulthood period of your life, is the best thing to do. For while you are young you are granted with forgetfulness, but being in this phase, it totally gives you a chance to go back to those memory lanes you walked past years ago. I love to cherish such moments. Don't have to think twice, get set going with this wondeful story by Robert Louis Stevenson, the journey about the Pirates and their hunt for the treasure won't disappoint you.

Penguin Clothbound Hardcover - Avoid!
This review is specifically regarding the cloth-bound Penguin Classic edition, and is not about the content of the book itself. The story is fantastic, and I'm enjoying reading this with my son.I also can't fault the printing itself. The lettering is crisp, and have seen no errors in the text so far. The map is lovely (if a bit small), and the overall book is beautiful to look at.However, the central issue is the print on the cloth is awful. When we received the book, there was a sticker on the back, and when I removed it, quite a lot of the red print from the parrots on the back cover came off with it. I was annoyed, but thought perhaps it was just the glue from the sticker that did it.However, when I started reading to my son, simply holding the book was enough to remove the red printing. It comes off at the slightest touch, both front and back, no matter where I touch it or hold it. See the attached photos. The quality is so poor, that it's left me reconsidering any further purchases of the Penguin cloth-bound editions, because if they have the same problem, it feels like a complete waste.

A Verifiable Classic
The term 'classic' doesn't tell you much. I read 'The Prisoner of Zenda' a while back, and it too was termed a classic though I cannot say honestly that the quality was all there. So is 'Treasure Island' a certifiable classic, in that case?I can happily answer in the affirmative. 'Treasure Island' not only has a plot that moves swiftly and logically from development to development, but is also stocked full of a cast of characters that will long remain in your mind and heart. From brave Jim Hawkins, our hero and narrator, to the enigmatic and dangerous Long John Silver, there are enough well-drawn characters here to populate a whole series of books. Their adventures prove intoxicating, and it is with sadness rather than relief that the last page in their tale is turned.

70 YEARS TO READ
I have reached 70 and yet have never read Treasure Island. Know the plot and all of the characters, and many of the sea shanties , but I have never read the whole book. It was well worth the wait. This is a good story, and well written though some of the seamen's speech is difficult to interpret, nonetheless it is a good tale, and has been a bench mark for children to read for the last 150 years. The story does finish rather abruptly and quickly, though it does provide a satisfactory conclusion. In the edition I read I think it would have been helpful to have a map of Treasure Island,as some of the geographical descriptions of the various journeys and locations were difficult to imagine and comprehend
