Snap bolt failed after 2.5 y in all weathers.
EDIT 2023:This is my 5th order of this product over 10 years. Label instructions state to replace every year or on deterioration. So this has performed above expectation. #4 was in a very tired but functional state after 4+ years. The vinyl was cracked and faded and there is superficial rusting of the clip hardware. The cable itself is galvanized, intact and not frayed. YMMV.ORIGINAL REVIEW:This is my second order of this item, the last being more than two and a half years ago. One end has been looped around a tree branch with the other end ready to receive an energetic 60 lb Irish Setter. This has worked very well. Lighter duty tie-outs have proved flimsy. Why am I replacing it? It failed. Not the cable, not the casing which is looking tired, but the internal spring of a snap bolt which is intended to close the loop and keep the dog attached to the line. Imagine my surprise when my tethered dog met a visitor in the street.I reckon I will simply replace it every couple of years...EDIT:I replaced this six months ago, and the bolt has failed twice in recent weeks. After the first failure (jammed open) I lubricated it with lithium grease. Second failure (weak spring action) - time to replace.

Lasted outdoors for six months
We got this to replace another cable we had which had begun to rust and snap in places. This one is holding up really well. I've noticed that the clasp is not rusting and sticking as much as some others we've used.We use this for a little pibble mix, she's about 45-50 pounds, and a strong dog, but only stays outside on it for about twenty minutes at a time. It's a good weight and strength for a dog her size. She finds it's also great for tangling up other dogs who attempt to rob her of her tennis balls.Editing my review to add: We bought this cable in July, and it snapped in January. The cable has been outdoors at all times, so exposed to heat and rain and cold. We only use this for our dog when we're outside with her, so she's not constantly putting pressure on it. I would assume it would have lasted less time if she was always adding wear and tear to it, and it probably would last longer if we brought it in when not using it. For our purposes though, it's got about a six month lifespan. Also, it was the cable itself that gave out, the clasps were still unrusted and working fine.

I wait a long time...
...to write reviews so I am sure if a product is durable enough for others who may be in the same situation I am in. At least twice a day we put our 65 lb. labrador retriever out in the back yard to run around. We attach his collar to this 40-foot extension and let him go. The extension is connected to a bolt I sunk into a window frame. The dog runs and runs and runs and I have never had to reset the bolt nor have I had to replace any of the hardware. I live in New England so we experience a lot of rain and snow and freezing change of weather, yet this product remains stout. I am glad there is a spring-loaded clip on one end as occasionally our dog spots a duck and forgets he is on a leash as he makes a mad dash toward the water. The spring "gently" reminds him to slow down. I have had this product for more than one year and have yet to have a problem.

Great for the price..."large" means bigger than lap dog
I bought this tie-out for my 47 lb. high energy Pit Bull. I would not recommend it for a Large dog despite what the title says. I was a bit worried about the cable coming apart based on a couple reviews, but decided it was worth a try at such a low price. So far I've been using it a few weeks and it has worked well. It stays outside in all weather, which I know will limit it's life. I did see the start of a bit of rust on the springs inside each clip, and treated each with some WD40. The cable is very long and allows our dog to explore. It does not kink or get caught up very easily, which is a plus. Overall I would recommend this tie-out, but only to someone with a 50 lb. dog or lighter, unless the dog is older and won't test the limits of this cable. See my photos in the photo section.

I still have a dog!
This has been (literally) a life saver for our 55lb German Shepherd Mix.Our Escape Artist (EA) is good at his job.We have a chain link fence and over the past 8 years we have buried cinder blocks, poured cement, attached poles along the base of the fence to tie the fence to, bought locks for all the gates, purchased an electric fence to enforce the fence boundaries, spent hundreds of hours training, all to no avail. With 50mph roads, coyote packs attacking neighborhood dogs, pet parents who let their dogs run loose... trying to keep EA in the yard is more than just to avoid him 'getting lost'. It's to avoid him getting killed. This tie out has done the trick. Since we bought it on August 3rd 2012 (3 weeks ago) we only had EA go 'for a run' 3 times. The first was the day we got it, I was hanging out with him while he got used to it, went inside for a drink, and came back to a broken dog collar. So we switched to a harness.I recommend a product like this: Rogz Reflective Snake Medium Dog Step-in Harness, Lime We actually have a top-paw version of this but I couldn't find it. Anyway, this has two metal tabs, both of which fit into the tie-out clasp together. The metal tabs are on either side of the harness, so once it's clipped up, the harness won't open even if the plastic-snap-clasp thing breaks.I also recommend making sure you have your harness adjusted correctly and snugly for your dog. This is how EA managed his last 2 jaunts during the first couple of days after receiving the tie out.Since then, we've had our sweet boy stay safe in the yard whenever he is outside. The 40ft length is great. He has access to all his favorite snooze spots. His water, food, the dog-pond, his preferred bathroom spot, the back door, and he has plenty of room to romp with our other 2 dogs (who are perfectly content staying in the yard with no enforcement needed.) He can also "just" reach 2 of our fences to see what's going on in the neighborhood without the danger of going over and hanging. I believe he has resigned himself to this keeping him in the yard, because on 2 separate occasions we have forgotten to clip this to him... and both times he stuck around!!! I won't rely on that, but will continue to rely on the Tie out... So far, so good!
