Gem from the 80s
Set during the early days of Independent India in Rajasthan (though the decor and costumes remain strictly in the 1980s), Batwara is a brilliant movie about how class differences between the Zamindar's family and the villagers poison everything -including friendship between the zamindar's son Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra who stands up for the rights of the villagers. You can see how little incidences add up slowly and finally resulting in the mob lynching of the Zaminder's tyrannical son, who is Vinod Khanna's little brother which provokes the latter to a terrible massacre.Of course it's the third parties who take advantage of the situation. When pride and emotion takes over, it takes little time for the old caste prejudices to take over and everything else falls to the wayside, including friendship.Questions about friendship vs loyalty to one's family, being true to oneself, feudal obligation arises as everyone ponders over the right thing to do.The women are not puppets either.Noteworthy performances from everyone in this multistarrar. Vinod Khanna especially embodies the spirit of the tragic but noble Rajput warrior.
