Seeing the New South: Race and Place in the Photographs of Ulrich Bonnell Phillips

fascinating and well written
This presentation of the early 20th-century photographs of an eminent Southern historian would be interesting enough if it were only a collection of those photos of African-American life in the South 1905-1930. The view presented by the photos is unexpected and revealing, at least to non-historians or those unfamiliar with Southern life. The discussion of the photos is perhaps even more absorbing. It is fascinating and wide-ranging. This accessible, clearly written book will enhance discussions on all aspects of the "new South."
