Lavazza Gran Filtro Whole Bean Coffee Blend, Dark Roast, 2.2-Pound Bag

I've long been on a search for a coffee bean that I truly love. I've tried everything from local roasters to supermarkets and to various bags of whole bean coffee from Amazon (such as Cameron's, Kicking Horse, etc.). While some have been good for my taste, I haven't been able to find one that makes me think "wow, that's amazing coffee" until now. The Lavazza Gran Filtro Dark is quite possibly the best coffee I've ever tasted. It has a nice smokey dark taste that stays smooth, and has a really nice chocolatey aroma. I brew this coffee in my Breville YouBrew which has a built in burr grinder and it just fills my home with the nicest coffee smell. I've also brewed it in a french press, and even put some into a reusable K-cup to try with a Keurig. This coffee shines with every method. The beans are of excellent consistency too, with no under or over-roasted beans in the bag I purchased. Keep in mind that If you prefer lighter coffee, this one may not be for you. It definitely doesn't have a super-heavy burnt taste, but it is dark and robust. Certainly not what your typical lighter "donut shop" or "diner" coffee is. Lavazza does make regular roast Gran Filtro beans, however I have yet to try those as I believe dark roast is perfect for me.

Lavazza coffee dark roast is a full flavored coffee w little or no acidity. It is smooth. RLM sells two 1 kg packages at a very reasonable price - $8 per lb(16 oz pound). Since my order qualified for free shipping that is delayed by Amazon for five days, I choose free shipping. This despite the fact that Amazon delays free shipping to encourage you to use Prime. Despite the fact that the shipment started 16 mi from my home, went a 35 mi away and the long way around my home, I received the coffee two days before the earliest delivery date. The only shortcoming and not so important is the best buy date. On the packages it is in two months, using up most of the best buy period although the coffee is probably good for another year as long as it remains vacuum sealed.

I will get to detailed opinions of Lavazza's dark roast Gran Filtro coffee, but first here is the summary: Fantastic coffee that is slightly over roasted. It is GREAT but not perfect like the normal Gran Filtro.I bought this 2 pound bag after having tried and LOVED Lavazza's regular Gran Filtro coffee for my daily pour-over brew. The regular roast hashints of caramel which are absolutely fantastic. Overall, the flavor is an almost perfect balance of nuts, subtle spice, and wonderful sweet caramel. These seem to be the same beans just roasted a little more. This dark intense roast has a slight burnt taste to it. Much like you would taste in a *$ brew. All this to say, do not over-brew this coffee. Stick with a coarse grind which will allow for a shorter brew time.Now, if you want coffee perfection, then go with the original Gran Filtro. You cannot get any bitter taste no matter how fine the grounds nor how hot your brew water is. That blend is coffee perfection! On the other hand, if you are used to a darker brew and have a taste for some slight bitterness - then this dark roasted Lavazza will likely be a step-up from what you are used to.I will be drinking and enjoying all 2 pounds of this coffee one cup at a time. This coffee is awesome. I used to do a mix between pure kona and jamaican blue mountain coffee I get wholesale for ~30% more than this (goldstar coffee on ebay its ~$15/lb in bulk), but this coffee has a better taste and mouth feel. The other reviews here are pretty accurate. It tastes like a medium roast despite the dark roast label. I've recommended it to a few other coffee snobs I know and they are now loyal customers. The price went up to $25 for the 2.2 lb bag for a few months but the price was still worth it. Luckily it went back down to <$19 a bag and now I am a happy camper :) As long as it stays under $30 I will keep buying it, but I wish Amazon had an easy way of getting a subscription more often than once a month. I go through one bag in about 3 weeks, so I just adjust my ship date by one week every time it arrives since I have no other subscriptions.

Living in NYC, the one luxury I would allow myself was a morning cup of coffee. It was often the bright point of my day, so I took care to find the cafe with the best cup. I later found that the cafe with the best cup was serving Lavazza. I was so excited to find these whole beans available for sale on Amazon, since brewing at home is a bit more cost effective than shelling out for $2 a cup. The beans were fresh and made the same delicious coffee I had grown to love!

I have an Astra semi-automatic and must back off the grind (a Pasquini, re-badged from Italy) two to three clicks since this is a 'wet' bean. The other Lavazza's I use (about 7 types in my rotation from this retailer) are far dryer and need a tighter grind, so my initial experience with this dark roast was surprising because it was more like a Seattle roast than Italian. I've given up worrying about percentages of robusta vs arabica...the taste is all that matters and I'm pleasantly surprised that this minor league Lavazza, not labeled as for espresso use, is becoming my favorite from this company. It's figity with grind, but the flavor is exception. Don't be deterred by the price, this is an exceptional flavor profile.

Coffee that tastes like coffee should taste. They sure know how to roast coffee at Lavazza. If you love great coffee, you owe it to yourself to get this product.
