It seems unclear from the product description, how many filters are included, 1, 2? Local retailer sells just the foam part in a 3-pack for $15.

contains 2 foams and 1 plastic insert. Insert was different than mine but foam fit over mine perfectly.

After a few washes, the filter doesn't seem to capture as much algae before it is clogged. How should I clean it?

This is NOT for cleaning your pond. This is to keep debris out of your pump. If you have algae, you either do not have a UV light /separate filter or you have a UV light NOT working. You either need to buy the separate filter & UV Bulb(usually all in one unit) or You may have to replace UV Bulb if you already have one. Good Luck!

will it fit all beckett pumps?

There are 2 different sizes. One is a 4 inch and the other is a six inch. This item was a pack of two six inch filters. I find they work well for a small pond but do clog afer a few days. The six inch fits beckett pump #7300410 listed as crystal pond. You can always cut it to 4 inches if you need to.

Are both sides of the filter open or is one side closed? I currently have a filter that is open on only one end for a fountain.

the foam filter is open on both ends but the plastic tube that it goes over is not. Just connect to the pump. That pump connection end needs to be compatible with the filter tube.
