can I use it to temper and harden steel ?

Probably. I am a glass artist and use this kiln for annealing art. This kiln can achieve 2200f, but you shouldn't push it above 2100f per manufacturers recommendation. The big thing is the size. I'm not sure how much steel you wish to temper, but the interior of this kiln is very small, one of the smaller available in fact, so keep that in mind when deciding. This is an amazing kiln however. I've owned two now. Probably the coolest feature is how insanely fast it heats up. I've never timed it, but I am pretty sure mine can hit 1050f in under two minutes with the door to the kiln closed ( I let it idle with the door open often, so I can garage projects). It is extremely portable. The Nintendo Gamecube of kilns, it even has a cool little handle! Plugs right into a standard wall socket, and needs much less clearance than other kilns (Mine just sits on the corner of my workbench). If this kiln will work for your needs, it is an easy buy in my opinion.

how big (ounce wise) of a crucible can fit into this furnance?

The Rapid Fire Pro has a 6" by 5" by 6" firing chamber. Whatever crucible you want to use that will fit in a space that size will work. This unit does not come with a crucible.
