Great book
I can't believe how many people are upset about something so petty as the photos running across a 2 page spread. I feel this format has worked well for many great street/documentary photography books, including Bruce Gilden's "Facing New York," Gilles Peress's "Telex Iran," and Jeff Mermelstein's excellent "Sidewalk." The 2-page spread really lets you see the detail in the pictures. Putting equivalent size images in a "landscape" page format would lead to one big unwieldy book. Anyways Richard Kalvar is a genius in subtlety, and the work in this book makes it definitely worth owning.

People just as they are
[[ASIN:2080300091 Earthlings]I love Richard Kalvar's photos. I am amazed that he is able to record people going about their regular lives - nothing is posed in any of his photos. And I particularly like the joy that spills from the scenes.Definitely a book to be kept close at hand to remind us we are all part of the human race!

The designer ought to be fired!
Although the photographies are great, you can't enjoy at all because of the book design. Almost all photos are cut in the middle, just because they are printed at double page, ruining the photo...It should be better in a landscape design book... Not recommended to buy if you want to see the beauty of these images...It's a pity!

Good photos, bad design
Kalvar's photos are worthy of being in a book. But I hate photo books that have the image going across both pages as a spread. That ruins the photograph completely!

The layout of the book is poor. Photos are double page spreads and against black backgrounds which I generally dislike.

Excellent
This is an excellent photography book. It shows how the natural and the incongruous exist side by side.

Best of 2007
Just when you thought the tradition of Frank, Cartier-Bresson, Winogrand and other modernist masters was a fading, flickering light, out of nowhere (or Paris, evidently) comes this brilliant collection of photographs! Poetic, wry, witty and complex, Kalvar's photographs limn the absurdity of life without resorting to sarcasm or slapstick. It's this tightrope act, and Kalvar walks it with grace. I disagree with reviewers that did not like the layout of the book... I think the layout enhances the experience of the work, giving the book a rhythm, and making the images flow like music. A must-have.

Addictive...
Just when you are in the last picture, you want to start all over again and again and...If you love everything that life offers and new ways to enjoy it, this is one of the best examples.(NOTE: Not a technical review since there are already very good ones posted)
