The Starman Omnibus 6 Hardcover – January 25, 2011

The previous reviewer did a great job of summing up the appeal of this volume and the Starman series in general. One of the great things about using a minor character (i.e. the original Starman) as the spring-board for this series is that it allowed a degree of creative freedom that you could never have with an iconic character like Batman or Green Lantern to tell an epic story worthy of Dickens. Sadly, I can't relate my favorite moment without a significant spoiler (it's in issue #73), but suffice it to say that Starman is a book whose heart was always in the right place, which you couldn't say about a lot of comics at that time.Of late, the pendulum superhero comics seems to have swung back towards the heroic, and perhaps that makes Starman seem less innovative in retrospect. Don't let that deter you from enjoying it, because it's just that enjoyable to read. Other than maybe Roy Thomas' 1980s JSA series All-Star Squadron, I can't think of any series that struck as perfect a balance between questioning the off-key attitudes of the Golden Age while also demonstrating why those characters continue to warrant our affection decades after they'd been left for dead.

One of the things I love the most about this comic is the love the writer has for the characters, not only the big guns, but the secondary ones too. It's always a pleasure to see old pals and how much potential they do still have.The relationships are realistically handled, even the aprioristically surreal/strange ones, funny at times, serious sometimes and generally moving.But what really blows my mind in this series are the Shade's speeches. His speeches are superb. His use of language and rhythm is magnificent. He could be rather pedantic and obscure but, as a non-native English speaker, I have enjoyed (I still do) every single word the author makes him to say.

The end of a classic series.This is probably my all time favorite Comic series and one of the few that the same writer stayed on board from start to finish.This is the last volume of the Starman Omnibus series and it brings the series to a very satisfying end. I highly recommend this volume along with the other 5 that preceded it. It would be well worth your time to read this series.

There was a ding in the book cover and glue from a stickers I had to remove. Besides that the book is in great shape, but I sigh in dissatisfaction every time I see the ding.

Great gift for my son-in-law

Anyone who likes comic books, especially super heroes, is doing themselves a disservice if they don't read Starman. With an emphasis on the characters and their relationships over "tights and fights", there's also a lot here that can please anyone who doesn't normally like the super hero genre.

Great format

If you've read the other Starman omnibuses then there is no doubt in your mind that you should get this. It is absolutely a beautiful and a definitive end for anyone to enjoy.

... und am Ende geht es noch einmal richtig zur Sache: Jack Knight kehrt von der insgesamt doch etwas lauwarmen "Stars my Destination" Storyline zurück, und die Stadt brennt. Und sofort merkt man, was bei dem langen Ausflug in den Weltraum gefehlt hat: Opal City, der Kern der neuen Starman Serie, wo man im Laufe von fünf Bänden so viele Personen kennengelernt hat, dass es schmerzt, wenn nun die Zerstörung hereinbricht.Es macht einfach einen riesigen Unterschied, ob irgendwelche Wesen im Weltraum um irgendeinen fremden Planeten kämpfen, oder ob die Bedrohung vor der eigenen Haustür stattfindet. In diesem letzten Band zieht James Robinson noch einmal alle Register, baut Figuren aus allen vorangehenden Handlungssträngen ein und webt das Ganze zu einer spannenden Storyline zusammen, die ein echter "Pageturner" ist - man will immer weiterblättern, weiterlesen. Günstig ist es natürlich dabei auch, daß es nun keine Specials, Annuals oder Miniserien mehr gibt, die von der Haupthandlung ablenken: Hier werden die Nummern ##61-80 abgedruckt, die reguläre Serie ohne Unterbrechung. Das heißt nicht, dass sich Robinson nicht zwischendurch wieder Zeit nimmt für einen Flashback oder einen Seitenstrang - aber alles führt organisch auf den großen Showdown hin, alles paßt zusammen. Und der Bösewicht in "The Grand Guignol" kommt nicht aus dem Nichts: Wer im Nachhinein genau hinschaut, kann Hinweise auf ihn schon ab Omnibus #3 in der Shade Miniserie finden - nur dass man sie da geflissentlich als "unwichtig" überlesen haben dürfte. Sähen und ernten in brillianter Manier, ein Comic Meisterwerk von höchster Qualität.Und zur Vollständigkeit vergessen die Herausgeber des Omnibus nicht einmal, die zehn Jahre später veröffentlichte #81 aus dem "Blackest Night" Crossover mit einzubeziehen. Exzellent. Die Zeichnungen auch: Quasi ausschließlich von Snejberg. Toll. Am liebsten gleich nochmal von vorne anfangen...

Avec ce 6è et dernier volume se clôt la réédition en intégrale du "run" que l'anglais James ROBINSON a consacré, pour l'essentiel entre 1994 et 2001, à Starman, un super-héros quelque peu oublié de la galaxie de personnages inventée ou récupérée par DC Comics dans les plus de 70 dernières années. Le Starman principal de cette série, Jack KNIGHT, n'a rien d'un super-héros mais occupe une place centrale dans la succession d'événements relatée par ROBINSON : la saga de tous ceux qui ont porté le nom de "Starman", mais aussi celle du personnage immortel appelé The Shade, celle de la famille O'DARE, celle de la ville d'Opal et bien d'autres encore. Toutes les intrigues semées au cours des 80 numéros de la série Starman, trouvent dans ce volume une conclusion. A noter, entre autres, le dialogue de Jack KNIGHT et de Superman. Tout au long de cette série, ROBINSON joue bien entendu avec les codes super-héroïques, et notamment la notion de "continuité" chère aux fans les plus enragés des comics de super-héros. Mais il apporte aussi une approche européenne, un onirisme inoui - sauf dans Madman ( Madman Gargantua ) - et très rafraîchissant. Les dessinateurs du "run", principalement ici le Danois Peter SNEJBJERG, contribuent par leur style lui aussi décalé à la particularité de cette oeuvre. De plus, comme le souligne Geoff JOHNS dans son propos introductif, l'histoire parvient à une conclusion, à une véritable fin. Ce n'est jamais le cas pour les autres super-héros. Enfin, c'est un véritable maniaque qui a organisé cette intégrale et elle inclut donc vraiment tout ce que les créateurs ont écrit ou dessiné pour Starman. Madman Gargantua
