Yu Yu Hakusho - Season 1 [Blu-ray]

One of the greatest Anime Series' of all time gets a stellar Blu-ray release!
This series has a special place in my heart. When I first saw it on Adult Swim all those years ago, I loved it from jump street. So much so that I was suckered into accidentally buying a horrid Chinese bootleg with absolutely terrible quality just to see how it ended before the US release finished its run.I wizened up shortly thereafter and got myself the whole series on DVD in the 8 volume 2nd release (the "First Battles", "Second Wind", "Third Strike" Boxes) and was finally content that my collecting was over. Barring potential FUNimation releases of the movies in the future, I thought I had the best there was.I was wrong.Studio Peirrot, the Japanese company who produced Yu Yu Hakusho back in the early 90s went back and did a gorgeous frame-by-frame remastering job, going back to the original film prints and restoring the series in such pristine condition. The art was crisp, the colors were brilliantly restored, the audio brought into TrueHD 2.0 Stereo. I thought the idea that we could possibly ever get something this nice to be a wonderful pipe dream.I was wrong again.FUNimation has gotten those very same masters and not only have they presented them just as flawlessly on this release, but they've gone back and remixed the dub track to a glorious TrueHD 5.1 track! They've even used alternate takes and slight shifting of the lines, causing the audio to now sound pristine and match the lipflap better than before.I swear watching this after seeing my DVDs was like night-and-day. The colors are so vivid, so brilliant, it's without a doubt the best I've ever seen a series that was not originally produced digitally in HD look. There are only a few minor issues that are worth noting, however I felt that none of these were big enough to warrant removing a star:- Being as the series is from the early 90s, you will occasionally catch very minor instances of grain and some slight dirt on the frames. this is sometimes most apparent on the thicker black outlines on some of the characters in some scenes. But these instances are very few and far between- By and large, the alterations to the audio were all beneficial to the overall quality, however on at least one instance, the original line pronounced a Japanese word correctly, however the version presented on this set mispronounced it. At Yusuke's wake, one of his teachers said "If you ask me Mr. Iwamoto, he probably saved that kid on accident...". In the original take on the original set the voice actor pronounces "Iwamoto" right as "Ee-wah-moh-toh" but for some reason the line was altered here so he says "Eye-wah-moh-toh". It comes off as jarring since the rest of the times anyone says that name they pronounce it the correct way.- This is only a negative to some, but there are no Japanese credits, none of the Japanese voice cast is credited, and all of the title cards are in English-only with the altered English titles. Although all written appearances of the name "Keiko" are now spelled correctly vs. the prior version's "Kayko".- The set has no extras beyond Textless Opening and Ending animations. There are trailers on the set too, but I would hardly rate those as an "Extra". After all the care Justin Cook said they put into these sets on the FUNimation blog and in that video he recorded in his car, it would have been nice to have recorded an audio commentary on one episode or a short featurette on the audio remastering. Even if he sat down with a better camera, or just recorded his voice over clips of the show and re-stated verbatim what he said in the car video and included that it would have been nice.Nevertheless, the set was absolutely superb. The only problem now is I only bought this one! This release got me fired up and I ended up eager to watch the rest of the series, so I popped in my DVD to try to continue but I had to stop. The quality really is night and day, and after being spoiled by this Blu-ray release, I dare say I won't be able to go back to my DVDs again! Congratulations FUNimation, you got $20 from this girl, and a guaranteed $60 more so I can complete my collection.

Impressive
Yuyu Hakusho for whatever reason doesn’t get the kind of main stream attention that Dragon Ball Z and Naruto etc get, but YuYu Hakusho is one of the best anime of that genre. This one is amazing and I’ve been so impressed by how good it is. I love the traditional animation style compared to newer animation that’s too shiny and computerish, so this is pretty much right up my alley. So far the action has been great and isn’t as drawn out and ridiculous as the fights in anime like Dragon Ball Z. Hiei has set himself apart as my favorite but they are all good characters. How can you not love the line “is that all you have to say? They’re last words you know”. Gotta love Botan as well. Even the humor is actually enjoyable compared to some similar anime where it’s too corny. Yes Kuwabara is corny but it fits and actually works. Obviously this one is just divided into parts and not seasons though because the last episode of this set certainly wasn’t meant to end a season.

The Bleach Dragon Ball Hybrid Of The 90's
Title says it all. This series is very "dragon ball" in the nature of the fights as well as the artstyle, but focuses on this soul society aspect like bleach and their "spiritual energy" like how in bleach main character gets the power to defeat this demon and gets caught up in this new adventure, similar to how our main protagonist in this series gets the power of being a spirit detectiveThe story begins with our main hero getting killed by a car, but is given a second chance to live again. After he is revived back to life is were the show really begins, as his adventures as a spirit detective will lead him to fight for his life. The series gets progressively better as it goes on. It's a very "power" anime like bleach, naruto, or one piece were the main character progressively grows stronger every few episodes or so. 28 Episodes for this price? Thats a steal, espeshally when you see the cost of new animes that are only 12 episodes long but nearly double or triple the price for such a short series. So your defently getting a lot of bang for your buck here. 600+ minutes of runtime isn't going to watch in a single day so thats good as it gives you something to watch on your days off. It also ends at the beginning of the "dark tournament" ark, which is supposedly the best ark in the series, idk.

the best
I first came across yu yu hakusho when I was browsing on amazon as there was no broadcast of this show in Australia at least one I didn't see when I was growing up so I thought as I had recently bought a multizone Blu-ray player I thought why not? and I was pleasantly surprised its plotline and general story which is often lacking in Japanese animation today it's a shame that it wasn't broadcast in Australia at all because I think it would have had a real following yesterday are some similarities to Dragon Ball Z like you could easily make comparisons with hie and vajita or even the blue haired woman in yuyu hakushou who helps yusuke in the series could be compared with bulma by putting comparisons aside . The anime is definitely standalone and completely unique in its story I feel that Dragon Ball z fans would absolutely love and appreciate in my personal opinion I think it's even better than the Dragon Ball or Dragon ball z series combined but see for yourself and make your own opinion I would definitely recommend you buy it The quality of the picture is great much better than the DVD and you won't be disappointed with the sound or audio also boasts the dump both dubbed and Japanese versions are flawless you will hardly be disappointed

My FAV anime of all time in amazing quality. Just a shame the case came damaged
I love this release and cant recommend it enough. Also it's region free so you can buy from wherever. It works on my UK stuff like my ps4 n bluray player so don't worry bout that. However whoever picked my copy is a prick cuz the case was cracked AND bent. Thankfully the actual stuff like the insert, sleeve and the discs were fine so I just have to buy a new case some time. Anyway, yu yu hakusho is amazing and you should watch it ASAP!

Also has good one liners
The show: well paced, full of action, humour and drama: a real roller-coaster. Also has good one liners! This edition: professional quality dub, sticks to the original source materials. Good performances, especially from the main cast. The vendor: excellent - a problem with an unexpected customs charge was sorted out *immediately*.
