Yes, I do think it would be appropriate! there are a lot of poetic words, words that make you think and use all of your senses! The case is small but there are alot of words packed in there!

Do the magnets scratch a stainless steel fridge?

I believe not. My edition had a rubberised backing that wouldn't scratch anything. RichardH

I understand why you ask this. I have seen similar things like this that peel - the laminated paper top peel away from the magnet - That has not happened with this set so far and we have had it for more than 5 years. It is still a big hit as well, still gets use.

Could these be dipped in water and food coloring and have the color stick to the tops?

I have not tried this and dn't intend to. I think the color would tend to smear off with use unless you protected it some way such as clear nail polish. The magnetic side is black, and word side is white so I wonder if the layers might separate. A light color indelible ink painted on with a brush might be a better, albeit tedious, choice if you really want color.
