Tom ArnoldMcHale's Navy

A very funny madcap motion picture.
Based on the popular 1960s sitcom "McHale's Navy", the film takes place after McHale (played by Tom Arnold) has retired from the navy. But when a terrorist named Vladakov (Tim Curry) threatens to intervene with a meeting with San Moreno's governor with a Chinese militant, a Russian General, and a European businessman, McHale will have to jump back into the saddle. But on one condition he gets his old crew back, with the help of his old ship mates and Lieutenant Penelope Carpenter (Debra Messing) McHale has to thwart the attack and save admiral Cobra (played by Ernest Borgnine). With Brian Haley, David Alan Grier, Dean Stockwell and Bruce Campbell " McHale's Navy" is a fun action packed film that will have you laughing for hours.

That's right 5 stars!
As comedies go, no this is not in the same class as Bringing Up Baby or Some Like It Hot but it's one of my favorites. I was a huge McHale's Navy fan as a kid and to this day I want to live in a Quonset hut on an Island. This movie is funny and lighthearted. Great cast too including Tom Arnold, Tommy Chong, Dean Stockwell, Bruce Campbell (without his chainsaw hand), Debra Messing, The always funny David Alan Grier, of course a role for Ernest Borgnine and Tim Curry as the wonderful inept villain Vladakov. This is just one of my favorites so five stars.

A Classic TV Comedy Comes To The Big Screen.
McHale's Navy is a 2003 DVD re-release of the 1997 feature film based on the classic ABC-TV series from 1962-66. Directed by Bryan Spicer, this hilarious action-comedy stars Tom Arnold(The Jackie Thomas Show)as Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale, Dean Stockwell(Quantumn Leap)as Capt. Wallace Binghamton, David Alan Grier(In Living Color)as Ensign Charles Parker, Debra Messing(Will and Grace)as 1st Lt. Penelope Carpenter, Bruce Campbell(Army of Darkness)as Virgil, French Stewart(Third Rock From the Sun)as Happy, and Tim Curry(Muppet Treasure Island)as Major Vladikov, the main villain in the film. In the movie, Lt. Cmdr. McHale(Arnold)enjoys a peaceful retiement on his home in San Moreno in the Caribbean, until Vladikov(Curry) arrives to the island nation to establish a Soviet army base, So McHale, with the help of Carpenter(Messing) and Parker(Grier), and against the warnings of Binghamton(Stockwell), joins up with his former crew and fight back against Vladikov and his cronies. The only special feature on this DVD is just the trailer of the film, nonetheless, McHale's Navy is a fun and exciting movie to enjoy with fans of the classic sitcom.

Give it a try.
I have never left a review before, but I felt the need to do so when I realized most of the people here are really reviewing the original TV series with Ernest Borgnine and not the Tom Arnold movie. This film was nominated for a Razzie, has a 3% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is universally hated by most film critics. I love it. I don't watch this expecting Oscar-grade material or talented Avant Garde cinema, but see it with the entertained eyes of a child (when I first saw it). It's a fun movie that I rewatch every year or two. Anyone who would give this a low score on any film review website takes cinema too seriously and doesn't understand some movies are just supposed to be fun. Watch this movie. Watch it with your kids or in an inebriated state if that suites you. But don't, under any circumstances, scoff at it simply because some YouTube troll decided to sign up for a Rotten Tomatoes account. Those metrics are meaningless. Watch this because it's fun.

Silly but fun family film
My grandfather took me to see this movie back in 1997 with my sister and I really enjoyed it. Its silly and very child friendly. Nothing offensive and even after all these years its still charming. Its a safe movie to watch with the kids.

Inaccurate product info
The description and image says this is "McHale's Navy" ONLY. It's a cheap "4 movie marathon" with 3 other films I couldn't care less about: "Thunderbirds," "Josie and the Pussycats," and "Rocky and Bullwinkle." I wanted "McHale's Navy" starring Tom Arnold from the '90s with maybe extras. No desire to watch these other films... maybe Rocky & Bullwinkle - I like stupid humour; hence McHale

Funny
Over acted, hammy, campy, and funny. At least to me. I like Tom Arnold in most of his roles and he is good in this one. Going to Cuba to get parts was a bit much but still funny with Tommy Chong playing two roles as a Cuban black marketeer set of brothers. In this version of McHale's Navy he is a retired officer with his own PT boat. His crew is not actually his but U.S. sailors stationed at a base. These guys are a modernized version of the original crewmen. Terrorists come to the island to set up a missile base. Captain Binghamton is played by Dean Stockwell. He can act, but the scenes he gets are one reason this movie was panned by some, in my opinion. Overall I found this to be a funny, watchable movie.

Very Funny
In my opinion, this movie is more than worth having in my extensive collection. However, I cannot compare it to the original TV series though, since I have never seen it. It aired a little before my time. I searched for this movie many times before finding it on Amazon because copies of it are no longer produced. I heard this movie was pretty much a bomb, both at the box office and DVD sales. But I sure like it though, I think its a terrific and light-hearted movie. If only the navy were so much fun, everyone would gladly serve. Tom Arnold is his usual hilarious self in this, while Dean Stockwell plays a bumbling not-too-bright overly ambitious officer. Certainly a far different role than he acted on the TV series JAG, as the Secnev. Overall, a very cute movie great for many laughs.

Too funny
Didn't disappoint, having seen this as a kid, watching it back again after several years, still cried laughing! Too many funny scenes to mention anything is particular, the general fight scene is the pub is a riot (pardon the pun).

Wrongly Orded
Didn't realise I needed region 2, not 1. So DVD was no good to me. Would like it if region 2 was available. It's a brilliant film.
