Bandai Dx Yokai-WatchU Prototype (Japan Import)

First of all let's clear this up right away: this is a JAPANESE toy and all the language on it is in Japanese. ONLY Japanese medals work in it; US medals will not even fit because the backs are configured differently. All the instructions are in Japanese. As of this review, a North America version has not been released yet.Now that all that is out of the way, this Yokai Watch "U Prototype" version is awesome. Unlike the earlier Yokai Watch models, this one can play ALL the previous Japanese medals. On top of that it can be updated with an SD card to play even more medals that were/will be released after this watch. I do not understand Japanese and yet I had no problem navigating Bandai Japan's website to download the latest upgrade file onto my SD card. The great thing is, you can use any old SD to do it. Once the file is uploaded you can remove the SD card, it does not have to remain in the watch. There are numerous instructional videos (in English) on youtube that demonstrate how to upload the file, and it is quick and easy to do.I am not sure if this version watch is in the YW2 or YW3 games, because I have only played the first game, in English. I know this model is featured later in the anime. The U Prototype shines all different colored lights when you insert a medal. The dome is fixed & does not pop up like the original model. When you hold the button, it does the "searching" sound along with a bright blue pulsing light. If you insert a legendary medal it does some amazing music. Just like the gimmick that it is, you will be wanting to get more & more medals after getting this watch, I guarantee it!Another cool aspect of the U Prototype is that the watch can be removed from the band. This is because there are a couple of kits you can get to change the look of the watch. A kit includes a new band and a rubber faceplate. This is supposed to be so that you can change the look of the watch without having to buy another whole new model. Unfortunately, as of now, the kits cost just as much (if not more!) than the watch itself. U Prototype retail is around $30 US and the kits are going for the same price, simply because they're new. :/ Hopefully in the future the price will come down.This toy comes with 2 sparkly, translucent red "Merica" medals. For some reason the watch strap is a little shorter than the previous 2 models, although it still should fit most adult wrists. If you're anxious for anything related to Yokai Watch and you don't want to wait for the US version, this toy is awesome. If you want to buy this for a child you might want to wait until the Hasbro version comes out in the US. As I said, everything is in Japanese and US medals will not even fit into this.

If you only buy one of the Japanese Yokai Watches - make it this one. Not only does it read and play alllll current Yokai Medals. For anything past the Stage 1 U Music Medals, you need to update the watch via an SD card (sold seperately)This new watch gives you new intro music for all the Yokai classes, and also features an Sd slot for Yokai Watch SD cards. Unsure what they do, exactly - but I saw one on youtube make all the medals mention Pinto (corn, I think) so I think the special sd cards put new voice info into the watch. (I'm making an educated guess, though.)What I found, though, is that updating the watch is essential to making it play Stage 1 U Medals. I won't play them without that info. Not sure yet how to put in the info in, other than placing the SD card into the slot.This watch comes with two American medals, of Pinto corn, and the new mascot character USA Pyon! The more medals you have, the more enjoyment you can get from this series! And since it plays most any medal, you can worry less about ordering the wrong ones.I did find that it sometimes tells you your putting the medal in wrong, and occasionally it will misread a medal, and give the wrong music and name. This isn't common, from my experience, however.The strap can fit adults - so everyone can have fun with it. With no medal inside, hit the switch to project a light and discover Yokai lurking in the darkness!

It works great, and works with the medals they send.But for the medals at ToysRUs they are selling they do NOT even go into the watch. If tou collect Japanese medals this is PERFECT, but if you're going to collect the American medals? You can't put them even inside this watch.

It only spoke Japanese . Price too high if I can adjust language!

My don loved it when he first got it but wants a US one due to not understanding what they are saying.The watch is more durable it seems then the US watch and has a sd card slot for updating as well as a light that acts as though you are looking for yo kai. A great watch for yo kai fans all together.

This is a great watch, with the best "summoning" light yet. It's the third Yo Kai watch we bought for our grandson. Doesn't come with batteries, which we didn't know at first, but we watched an unboxing (on YouTube), so we quickly figured out why it wasn't working right out of the box. Make sure you google the how-to for the firmware upgrade, without the download your medals will not play. Had to watch several YouTube videoes (Japanese, no subtitles!) before I could figure out how to navigate the website, but nowhere near as fraught and irritating as the Windows 10 upgrade I was forced into on our old desktop.

My son loves this watch. He also has the two American YoKai watches. We had to do the update to this watch for it to play the medals correctly which was extremely easy. I would recommend to others! Thank you

I love the new summoning songs and detailed design, but it lacks functionality outside of the medals and app.
