Pagan Magic of the Northern Tradition: Customs, Rites, and Ceremonies

Nothing practical with flawed history
I agree with the reviewer who mentions plenty of history, but no practical application. For instance, you'll learn that there was weather magic, but not how it was performed. But worse, errors in the history makes me question all of that. For example, Pennick asserts that the Germanic peoples lacked deities for the sun and moon, and that the Wunjo rune is a weather vane. I ended up throwing my copy away

So much more Helpful and Honest than most.
Fantastic investigative work into the traditions involving supernatural practices of Northern Europe. Practitioners and Non-Practitioners will find something interesting as there seems to be something for everyone in this work.

chalk full
this book is chalk full of good information. Alot more informative and less magicky than i was expecting but a great read and a good addition to my spirit library.

Unengaging
Much like a dictionary, it provides a great deal of names and data, with very little insight relating to the entries.

Love the history in it but there was nothing really on how to practice the northern tradition

I have two copies (and don't mind)!
I got this one on kindle, then went back and bought a physical copy so I'd be able to put in flags and easily go back to look up interesting facts. (Perhaps someday I'll learn how to do that on the electronic devices, but until then, I felt I needed a physical copy as well. I wish Pennick lived nearby I'd love to be able to chat with him.

Disappointed
When buying this book, I was hoping for information on magical traditions in the Northern tradition. However whilst there is a lot of information in this book, a lot of it is not Northern at all. I would go so far as that a lot of it is actually more Kabbalistic and otherwise southern. Add to that the mistakes I've found in the knowledge presented (indicating poor research), makes this book a disappointment on the whole.

De che stamo a parlà? E' Nigel Pennik! Un'istituzione, cazzarola.
Ma non la scrivo nemmeno la recensione: il libro parla da solo.

Er.. since when was Ireland part of the Northern Tradition?
The cover is rather misleading. When you see something state 'the northern tradition' one automatically assumes NORDIC, ya know, Northern. The first half of this book was really interesting, exploring concepts of the Northern tradition, often having to infer from evidence across the whole of the Nordic countries because evidence is rather scarce. However the latter half of the book just seems to keep talking about Ireland and Scotland, even English traditions. However, there are lots of little snippets of interesting things in the book of the Nordic Loving pagans amongst us. However, I wouldn't rely on this book for that. If you want to read it to understand pre-christian and later development of pagan customs in to the Christian Tradition then do read it!So a mixed bag.
