Q: How much does it weigh ?

Probably less than a pound. Very portable and sturdy, although if using it for outside concerts I still need to keep my foot on one of the legs on a windy day!

Q: Can I put a book on it? Would it be sturdy enough?

Depends on book but my daughter can put her 1 1/2 inch binder and a music book that is at least 3/4 inch thick on it. Very sturdy.

Q: Are metal spring arm extensions removable without breaking them?

They are permanently attached. I'm pretty sure any effort to remove them would most likely break them. They are, however, very easily moved out of the way when not needed by simply moving them to the underside of the tray part of the stand.

Q: could it hold a book?

Yes. But the Stand might tip over if the (Music) Book is heavier than Four pounds.This particular model is ideal for Sheet Music and has Two Wire Holders to holds it in place.
