Takes a bit of getting used to.
Up until recently, I used an old analogue metal detector to locate pipes and cables in the walls, but after seeing someone else using the new digital types, I decided to get one. While I was dithering about which one to buy, my wife went ahead and bought me this particular model! For basic functionality it's pretty easy to use - switch on, calibrate and move it over the area and it'll identify studs, pipes and mains cables. Our house if pretty old and there's very little in the way of stud walls to be of use, testing this, but it certainly has mapped out pipes and mains cables which were the things I was most worried about anyway. The ability of "deep penetrate" walls is also a very useful feature.I've had this for just over a week now and haven't used it in anger, but I have been trying it out and have found it to be very accurate finding known pipes and cables - and it's also identified a couple of unknowns which actually turned out to be correct.I would suggest it you are in the habit of drilling into walls, you really need something like this for peace of mind - but don't expect it to be useful right out of the box, especially if you haven't used something like this before - it does take a few attempts to get used to it! Be prepared to test it out on known studs, pipes and cables to get used to it before using it in anger!

Did what i wanted
I researched quite a few stud finders and this product seemed to have the best reviews at the price bracket it sits in. I purchased it after reading the review comments and have to say i am very pleased with it. Lets be honest, at this price you are not going to get professional quality tools, but the device worked fine for me, finding studs and quite accurately too, i tried it on the AC wire finder and although not as accurate it did show where the wires were running up the wall. I found that by callibrating the device before use as instructed (which takes seconds) it worked fine. please dont think this review is based on the offer of cash back, thats an added bonus :-) am i happy with my purchase ? yes, did it do what i wanted ? yes, DIY or professional ? This is Extremely ACCURATE
The media could not be loaded. I am so pleased that I bought this stud detector. My previous one was not accurate at all. This one is spot on.It shows the centre of the stud. I tested it by using an awl tool and its is extremely accurate when showing the centre of the stud.It found the studs in less than 20 seconds and takes all the guesswork out of the equation. I am not a professional but a keen DIY'er and I do a lot of wood working in and around the house. This tool has made my life significantly easier and as I said before took the guesswork and fear out of the equation. I can now drill into my plasterboard with confidence in the knowledge that there are no wires and metal behind the plasterboard and most importantly I am drilling in the centre of the stud for maximum strength of the fixings. As I won't use it every day, I tend to remove the battery from the unit when I storage it in my tool bag.

Not for tiled bathrooms
I got this to find stubs behind a bathroom wall which was tiled - in order to install a hand rail. This job is far from ideal for devices like these, and there are disclaimers, so I am not blaming the manufacturer or returning the device. It is simply a warning to others who might contemplate using one of these for a similar job.Firstly the good points. The device detected wiring behind the bathroom wall which we hadn’t anticipated - but which on refection made good sense. Good save there.Secondly, the instruction leaflet was pretty good and reasonably comprehensive. But when it came to stub finding I’m afraid it really didn’t work reliably for me.The walls were of plasterboard mounted on a wooden frame comprising vertical stubs. In the bathroom the walls were tiled. On the lowest two stub settings, it found nothing at all. I recalibrated on various parts of the wall, but to no avail. On the third, deepest, setting, it appeared to find stubs and even beeped on several ‘centres’ . Trouble is - the results were not repeatable and in a couple of cases unbelievable. You could slide over in one direction and find a ‘stub’ but on going back an inch, find the ‘really strong’ reading had gone. Not a reliable way to find stubs. Recalibrating on various parts of the wall where no previous stub readings had appeared did not improve the result.Trying to find the metal nails to trace the stubs was a complete failure. Indeed I held the machine over such a nail in a bedroom and it didn’t fire off at all.In all, after using the device many, many times, I think I know where one stub might be. But we’re not risking it. We’re getting a floor mounted grip instead.Apparently the device has a micropressor. I suspect its programming may be just a little too smart for its own good.I too received the card offering a free laser level if I submitted a review - though it didn’t require that review to be positive. I won’t be claiming. As said earlier, this is not a ‘Rubbish - Don’t Buy’ review. As I found out later, friends with similar devices from other manufacturers have results which are just as bad in tiled bathrooms. It is simply a warning ‘ Make sure the device is suitable for the job you want it to do.’

Good stud detector
Happy with this stud detector, at first I wasn't sure how it works as I have not used one before. After reading the instructions it is pretty simple to use and does what it says it does. it is not intuitive without instructions as it needs calibrating before each use, which is really simple and take 5 seconds, but if you don't know to do it then you might find it frustrating. It found the centres of the studs in my wall which is plasterboard onto battens. It also seems to find electrical wires but when near a switch seems to pick up the switch around it about 10 cm away in the air and around its perimeter. Not an issue but something to be aware of.
