Ibiza Surprise (A Dolly Mystery Book 3)

Dorothy Dunnett wrote really good books.
It's a really good junk book. I first bought a paperback copy for $0.33 but didn't get to read the end so spent $7.99 to find out what happened. Dorothy Dunnett has another series of historical fiction books that are really good as well. My library had the first one and I have now bought the middle three. I think Johnson Johnson is the same character as Lymond in the Lymond Chronicals but contemporary and maybe less fraught. Anyway, so far I really like all of her books. Give them a try.

a great read
Dorothy Dunnett's Johnson books have been some of my favourites for years, since they were the Dolly series. Well written, the plot is always well worked out and entertaining. They should be made into movies! (that's if the makers coud hold onto the Englishness of them and keep the humour subtle. The Flamenco dancers at the party are the whole reason I bought this. Hysterically funny scene.

Gripping, adventurous, heady and downright glorious
Author Dunnett is really the best user of the English language. She uses words so well you can picture being there. Her characters are brassy and ridiculous. The places she takes you are unique. Always a good read.

I love Dorothy Dunnett and only discovered this series recently
I love Dorothy Dunnett and only discovered this series recently. I am glued to the end of the book. She startles and surprises on every page and the detail is astonishing.

Very good
I really enjoy Dorothy Dunnett's Johnson Johnson/Dolly suspense series. They would make great movies and I wish someone would hurry up and make them. Great visual, characters, and tons of excitement.

Always a bit of a stretch
While I love Dorothy Dunnett's books, and have really enjoyed the mysteries (though $185.00 for a PB edition of this title? Someone must be joking) the whole story is a bit of a stretch -- in inventiveness, in endurance, in the poise needed to "participate" (in this book Sarah, or She She, the main character, is only 20) and in all the facets of the plot. Each one of the mysteries features a different location -- all quite exotic. Dorthy Dunnett must have spent some time in those locales getting familiar with all the noooks and crannies. Further she sure polished up the use of words and the art of rapid "on your feet" thinking, speaking, acting and reacting! Further each of the main characters have a formidable grasp of whatever bit of work they are pursuing -- cooking in this one. Sarah mentions whipping up lobster in aspic during the afternoon == when she was also very busy doing other things.

A Wee Bit Dated Now
Read this years ago but had forgotten the story and as Dorothy Dunnett is my favourite author am in the process of re-reading all her novels. The historical ones are fantastic and the 'Dolly' series totally different and much more light-hearted. So... a good read if you want something to escape with although the format in this series is very much the same people (although the heroine has a different name each time) in a different setting every book. This one seemed rather out-dated now (or maybe I've just read too many!) but if you want a light-hearted murdery mystery read set in Ibiza in the 60s this would fill the bill. Personally I preferred A Rum Affair and especially Dolly and the Bird of Paradise.

Ibiza Surprise
Enjoyable easy reading as usual. especially in the middle of winter. I think the 'Dolly' book have dated rather badly whereas Dorothy Dunnett's historical novels last
