The massive evidence is here in this important book on magnesium. I am pleased to have been taking magnesium for so many years.” —Abram Hoffer, M.D., author of Putting It All Together: The New Orthomolecular Nutrition Review: MINDBLOWING! - Where have I been my whole life? under a rock? . Maybe the information was what was hidden, not me-but none-the-less,This BOMBSHELL necessity for health and overall balanced nutrition has been eluding me for years even after extensive research! NOW I CAN BREATHE-I feel like I have that missing piece. I think this is the information I needed to complete my life's health goals-information that would have GREATLY helped me my WHOLE LIFE! After reading this book-just the intro-I saw everyone I knew flashing through my thoughts along with their various ailments that were so obviously deficiencies instead of chronic diseases as they believed! I reached out to my family and friends the next day when I finished the book and suggested they all read it-take magnesium and if they didn't I'd buy the book for them and possibly the magnesium too. I've been actively taking natural calm since I got morning sickness a month into my pregnancy- it only took a day for the symptoms to completely subside! I got a tip on pinterest about magnesium and morning sickness and thank God I did! I had AWFUL morning sickness with my first pregnancy, I had every sort of complication-I started keeping a journal out of disbelief at how miserable all my symptoms were! I felt cheated and lied to by all these women-my mother included-that told me how easy and symptom free their pregnancies had been. I was just miserable! Yet-here I am pregnant again-I've been on a healthy diet (Weston A Price style as mentioned in the book- also think 'nourishing traditions' recipe book) since the beginning of 2013 and since the advent of taking the magnesium have had an INCREDIBLE, AWESOME, near-SYMPTOMLESS pregnancy so far (4&1/2 months now) I have added epsom salts and magnesium chloride flakes to my biweekly baths for almost a year now too. The author recommends GOOD dietary advice and guidelines, minutely different than my own, but so appropriate for almost everyone to improve their health aside from magnesium supplementation. LISTEN to her dietary recommendations! Similar guidelines and diet has changed me from miserable to in awe of my health and vitality! I feel better than I ever did and I'm pregnant! This book resonated with me since it directly affects nearly everyone I know/knew as well as me! I personally have struggled with irritability and anger issues since I can remember-10, 12? I always worried it was because I might be bipolar/had a bad relationship with my dad who is bipolar(really probably just magnesium deficient but BIPOLAR is his official diagnosis)...but since taking magnesium-I am sooooo mellow-my husband noticed within a week of me taking natural calm-how easy to deal with I had become. I have had so many deficiency symptoms-I am so glad to know how I can eliminate them and provide my children with enough magnesium for healthy growth and maximum genetic development! My favorite qoute--probably because it has been stated often in much of the health literature I've been reading-is "the most important environment surrounding genes is the co-factor for biochemical processes--vitamins and minerals" I believe we are not at the mercy of our family's "hereditary" ailments-that with proper nutrition and supplementation, our (children's) genes will develop to their full potential, safe-guarding them from the deteriorating health we or our relatives experience. This information feels like the final huge puzzle piece in my research for optimum health per generations of examples in traditional cultures. Now, Knowing intricacies about vitamins and interactions and amounts and absorption information about magnesium-I feel EMPOWERED to reign in the health in my home-for myself and my children! This book relays very advanced information on so many fronts-it may have been simpler to write a book about what magnesium doesn't do and can't help. The specificity in certain conditions-such as the recommendations for supplementation and dietary guidelines per specific type of deficiency and the inclusion of unusual treatments-such as magnesium in the ear for deafness due to calcification (something my sister was getting surgery for in a month but is now going to attempt to resolve with magnesium) exceeded my expectation in an informational book about magnesium's processes in the body. The high dose vitamin D information really stood out as I have really been trying to boost my vitamin D-but had NO idea I needed magnesium to supplement it! I immediately ordered ionic magnesium for my son, husband and I. I truly appreciate how much ground the book covered and how persistent the author is in updating her information, revising it and adding to her knowledge-therefore our knowledge. I personally am disappointed when I read a great book but its information/statistics and cultural climate are so outdated. Authors who take the time to write such important information once, should endeavor to maintain its legitimacy/legacy by remaining current as this author has done so well. We are all lucky this author continues her efforts to help us all. Let me just finish and stop rambling by saying that this book will teach you how much magnesium does for everyone, how you can benefit now from using it, what kind to use, offers you encouragement and information to take control of your health, provides excellent nutritional sources and advice; its the knowledge you have been living without that could save your life-and at the very least improve it. It doesn't preach, it doesn't postulate, it won't guilt trip you or make you feel stupid, it doesn't skirt uncomfortable issues-its about RELAYING MEDICAL FACTS and HELPING YOU in your quest for better health! Magnesium isn't patented, comes in many forms/applications, it isn't terribly expensive, it can be added into any lifestyle and should never be ignored or taken for granted again! Updates: Since taking ionic Liquid Ionic Minerals Magnesium (96 Servings at 100 mg Elemental - plus 2 mg fulvic acid) magnesium for just 2 weeks in addition to my baths and magnesium oil & lotion, I have noticed diminished fatigue (like hardly anything when I usually get super sore and exhausted) when I do lots of hard yard work, my usually (nomatter the weather, season) dry lips which always have dry, chapped skin are smooth and hydrated. The other night, I woke up with leg cramps (after consuming lots of sugar) and used magnesium oil/took some ionic magnesium, and they completely prevented any further cramping...a fungal infection which causes my scalp and face to peel has subsided- no more flaky hair line...I have all sorts of little differences in my life I never expected to change or knew what caused them. You really have no idea what you're missing out on until you read this book and take magnesium/restore your mag levels. Review: MAGNESIUM, what it's needed for: Everything. Likely most of us is deficient. - For me, the most important insights from of this book were: 1. How particular drugs used for various ailments deplete magnesium, which is needed to cure the ailment. As Dr. Dean says, we aren't deficient in drugs; we're deficient in nutrients, especially magnesium. 2. How magnesium is counteracted by especially calcium and phosphorus, but also by fluoride, aspartame, and other ingested products. A visit to Dr. Dean's web site confirmed what I have believed for quite a while, that it is vital that Magnesium's intake be higher than Calcium (and other minerals). Before purchasing THE MAGNESIUM MIRACLE, I read the editorials and the 29 customer reviews posted on the desertcart buying page. That collection provides an excellent synopsis of this book; instead of repeating what's been said, I'll focus on personal reactions to this life saving information. I wanted to read a detailed, reliable source on the symptoms, causes, and cures of magnesium deficiency, and I wanted to read it on my Kindle Wireless Reading Device (with its in-house dictionary and free Google capacity for searches). I also wanted to learn how to get magnesium absorbed and functioning, and to learn about varieties and effectiveness of oral and transdermal applications of this mineral, which I had believed for decades to be one of the most vital nutrients. Over the years I had periodically taken oral tablets and worked to get high magnesium foods into my diet, but I had never felt adequate results from either of those methods. I was also curious about how magnesium deficiency could be tested accurately, since I had read that blood tests give misleading readings. All the above and more was covered in easily comprehensible detail from the general chapters which I read first, deciding to focus on those before the chapters specific to certain diseases, especially the conditions I hadn't developed. (For background on that see my review of Swanson Ultra Magnesium Oil 8 fl oz (237 ml) Spray ). From the general chapters I learned about varieties of oral and transdermal forms of magnesium and how they compared as effective sources of elemental magnesium.* I learned that a simple saliva test for Mg level adequacy could expose much more than a basic blood test, and why. I learned a bit about the history of magnesium studies and uses. What surprised me was how much useful information I found in the chapters on different diseases, about how they are caused by magnesium deficiency, aggravated by drugs prescribed specifically to each ailment, and cured by having magnesium retained and working properly within cell structures. One part of the book I question slightly [for myself] is the recommendation to follow a diet regimen. [Update: 2/26/10: Recent info from Dr. Dean indicates she is currently advising a more individually intuitive approach to food choices, moving away from what she terms dietary dogma, to which I say, "YES!" Check her web site blog.] Prior to reading this book, I had studied which foods are high in magnesium, and Dr. Dean's information contributed well to that background. What I've learned through Google searches recently, however, is that many Mg rich foods are also high in calcium and phosphorus, minerals which, if present in excess can defeat magnesium from being absorbed or used. Some of this was detailed in previously read books like Obesity Cancer & Depression: Their Common Cause & Natural Cure . Dr. Dean explains how magnesium can be defeated if other minerals are too high in comparative percentages, and how our soils have been depleted of magnesium. At the same time, magnesium experts strongly push dietary recommendations. My concern is that it's nearly impossible to know the percentages of magnesium to calcium, phosphorus, and other Mg depletion agents in the foods I specifically purchase, prepare, and swallow. Pro and con arguments can be read on every health issue related to foods (or related to anything, for that matter). I've read reports which give opposite information on a particular food being high or low in magnesium (or in increasing acidity or alkalinity in one's system). Some foods recommended for magnesium content are listed elsewhere for low bio-availability of that magnesium content. In view of the contradictions of nearly every food promoted as a cure all in one study and a death warrant in another, and due to my belief that we were given taste buds for a reason, I had long ago decided that the best way to health for me was to avoid "medicine" as much as possible and to eat what sounds good at the time of being ready to eat, then savor the flavor. I follow cravings, yet am observant enough to discriminate healthy vs. unhealthy cravings. Basically, a healthy craving satisfies without the need to gorge, and an unhealthy craving never seems to get any type of satisfaction, even when I eat enough to be "stuffed." I've noticed that I crave a certain food for a while, eat it regularly, feel satisfied with a reasonable amount, then suddenly one day feel I don't want that food any more. When I do Google searches on what a craved food contains, I see how that food filled a temporary deficiency. There are studies pro and con on salts, various types of fats, sugars, coffees, teas, flours, etc. I don't avoid any of those foods because I don't believe they are harmful unless or until I begin to have a distaste of them, which I have at times, in which case I avoid that food. Determining what will nourish comes through my tongue and palate. Even so, I continue to study what foods contain and to read pros and cons on their potential value or detriment, then make up my own mind. Especially during evening meals, I tend to eat leafy green vegetables and fruits because I believe they are generally healthy, but mostly because I like them and they satisfy. I like most of the foods Dr. Dean lists as good Mg sources, and which I had read before as being such. However, most mornings in my current habit I have coffee, a cinnamon roll with (real) butter, and bacon (cured with heavenly natural SALT brine instead of phosphates or citric acid, etc.). The only supplement I take, orally or transdermally is magnesium. Calcium is abundant in many foods which I and most people eat frequently by taste rather than by prescribed diet, and through interjection in prepared foods due to the past decade's belief, with the best intentions, that Calcium is the Olympian mineral. After taking magnesium by tablet and transdermal applications for several months, my body is still working to rid itself of calcium deposits. I love dairy products, but have cut back on them slightly, and will not begin eating cheese freely again until I the magnesium presence in my system elevates to what it needs to be. Possibly what I admire most about Dr. Dean is that, as wise and well studied and experienced as she is she doesn't suffer from a Goddess complex. She has admitted on her web site (not in these words, but to this effect) that she realizes she might discover along the way that what she believed yesterday, based on what seemed to be the best science, might be proven wrong today... and that what she believed to be harmful yesterday might be proven the first true futuristic "snake oil." Only one thing is certain, for me. MAGNESIUM is the INDEX! And given current cultural conditions, transdermal is a KEY. Related to that, I highly recommend this book, too: Transdermal Magnesium Therapy: A New Modality for the Maintenance of Health I agree with other reviews which have noted: Everyone would do well to read THE MAGNESIUM MIRACLE, especially medical professionals. Dr. Dean, you're doing a great good for the human race. I salute you! Linda Shelnutt *[I feel that that all the evidence is not yet in on bioavailability, and believe that Dr. Dean would agree there. Though transdermal application seems to be getting results quicker than oral, I still prefer Magnesium Oxide Powder 8 Ounces as my source of oral mg. Mag oxide might not be as good a choice for others, though, because it can cause a type of diarrhea in higher doses. In my unique situation that aspect appears to be working multiple benefits for me in vital ways which I'd like to record at some point.]

Magnesium is the great relaxer
I knew magnesium was important from other books I had read, and other classes I had taken, but I didn't realize how many things reduce the amount in the body such as, exercise, sweating, stress, prescription drugs, fluoride, and calcium supplementation. Magnesium is necessary to properly metabolize calcium, and it keeps calcium in solution in the body, so it prevents calcifications, which are quite common. Magnesium is therapeutic in treating the following: 1. Anxiety and panic attacks- because it helps keep adrenal stress hormones under control 2. Asthma - both histamine production and bronchial spasms increase with magnesium deficiency 3. Blood clots - magnesium prevents blood clots and thins blood without side effects. 4. Bowel disease - magnesium deficiency is one of the main causes of constipation. 5. Cystitis - bladder spasms are worsened by a magnesium deficiency. 6. Depression - serotonin (mood elevator) is dependent on magnesium for its production and function. 7. Heavy metals - magnesium is essential for the removal of heavy metals such as aluminum and lead. 8. Diabetes - magnesium facilitates the production of insulin and the transfer of glucose into the cells. 9. Fatigue - magnesium deficiency affects hundreds of enzymes, and fatigue is one of the first signs of a magnesium deficiency. 10. Heart disease - The heart requires magnesium as does all muscles. 11. Hypertension, hypoglycemia, insomnia, kidney disease, migraines, nerve problems, PMS, osteoporosis, Raynaud's syndrome, and tooth decay are all aggravated, and sometimes caused by a magnesium deficiency. Calcium causes muscles to contract, while magnesium gives them the ability to relax. This is why it is so helpful in the treatment of heart disease, asthma, migraines, PMS and Raynaud's syndrome. She told a very scary story where a Florida high school football coach gave his players a calcium supplement on a very hot day before a game. Eleven players became disoriented and had difficulty walking. Their speech was slurred, they complained of muscles spasms, and they were breathing very deeply. Within an hour eight of the boys collapsed into full-blown seizures. Thirteen of the players reported headaches, blurred vision, muscle twitching, nausea, and weakness. They all eventually recovered. The heat, exercise, and calcium supplementation had driven their magnesium levels dangerously low. Magnesium deficiency may play a role in sudden cardiac death syndrome as seen with athletes. She generally recommends 600-1,000 mgs, and depending on your health condition will determine what type of magnesium to take. This is one of the better books I have read on natural health care. I'm currently working on a summary for myself, I'm about halfway through and already have four pages of notes. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about natural healthcare.

great information!
I bought this book to learn more about the role of magnesium in relation to my daughter's migranes. Instead, I have learned about the failing health of my entire family. My husband has type II diabetes, I have asthma, two daughters suffer with migraine, and another is ADHD. As I read this book, I began to identify with the causes for magnesium depletion and its subsequent symptoms, and have been wonderfully enlightened. It describes our family's circumstances and health issues in ways that connect all the dots, not just one or two. They all seem to be inflammation diseases, caused by an inadaquate magnesium intake and excess magnesium deleption due to stress, medications, and other factors. We do not smoke, drink, or consume caffine, and we do try to eat well, and yet, slowly over time, magnesium deficiency has gotten the better of all of us. I feel like this book finally answers the questions that I have and maps out the road back to better health. It has only been a few weeks, so I cannot say for certain, so I can not give this 5 stars, yet. But already my asthma is improving by diet and putting my calcium and magnesium back in balance. As an asthmaic, one of my triggers is dairy. I avoid all dairy products as a general rule, and supplement with some calcium. But, as I have approached menopause, I have been concerned about possible bone loss, and decided to increase my calcium supplements to the full amount. About the same time, my asthma began to get worse, for no apparent reason other than I am aging. I was losing energy, experiencing brain fog (espeically in the morning when I first wake up), and despite being overly tired at night, awakening in the middle of the night with insomnia! I went to 4 doctors, most of whom support nutrition and supplements for better health, yet none of them suggested testing me for magnesium or the delicated magnsium/calcium balance that this book instructs about so well. Then I bought this book (to help my daughter!), and read one sentence: "Smooth muscles directed by too much calcium and insufficient magnesium can tighten the bronchial tract, causing asthma." After addtional study and reflection of my habits, I stoped taking the calcium supplements, and changed my diet for increased magnesium, and for the first time in months, my asthma is back under control. This is just one of several connections I have seen with my family and our health, in relation to magnesium deficiency. In time I hope to reintroduce calcium supplements, but in the proper balance with magnesium as this book suggests. I also decided to buy and read "The Magnesium Factor": another excellent book about magnesium deficiency and it's effect on life-threatening diseases. It's focus is more on heart conditions, though, which are not an issue for our family at this time. But it is excellent as a second resource (I do not believe in taking the word of just one source-) This book has also lead me to buy the book "The Inflammation Syndrome": to learn more about these related health issues. I haven't recieved it yet, but I'm looking forward to, and seeing if it supports these theories.

I AM a Believer in this Scientific "Miracle"
Two short stories. A few years ago I would get cramps in the calf of my left leg upon awakening. This infrequent event morphed into a daily morning ritual. The cramping upon awakening was not just daily, but multiple and had spread to my right calf also and then to contorting my toes. I was literally "yelling" in pain; rubbing did no good. The final assult was in my hands: Due to some triggering movement my fingers would freeze into a weird, contorted shape; I had no control; I simply had to endure. Knowing most GPs know little about nutrition and are prone to give some drug, I inquired at my health food store. It was recommended that I take 400mg capsules of calcium with 200 mg of magnesium just before bedtime. I did so. The next morning when I awoke I could not even induce the slightest cramp! That was a "miracle" to me. And so it has been for months now because I take a regimen of calcium with magnesium. (If I consumed much dairy, I would not take additional calcium.) A final story. Although a senior citizen I am very physically active (tennis and the gym deplete magnesium, by the way) and around this time I was due for my yearly physical. It showed that I had a mild heart arrhythmia even though my large veins and arteries are "whistle clean" of occlusion. This book tells me that my body runs on electrical impulses and magnesium is essential for good heart health (among many functions), and that low magnesium--which I knew I had--is essential for good heart health. And that low magnesium can cause heart arrhythmia and even stroke no matter how clean ones arteries are. So, I was glad to have added magnesium to my supplement list, even upping it from 400 to 600 mg a day. This small volume is an easy read and so reassuring with the scientifically-backed research. You will find it very enlightening how essential magnesium is. I highly recommend this book to everyone currently suffering (or not) the ill effects of low magnesium. Let me add that I also read another new book called THE MAGNESIUM FACTOR which is a very helpful source stocked full of research-backed data, but THE MIRACLE is smaller, the style is an easier read, and the information quite sufficient. Regardless, you won't go wrong with either or both books. UPDATE as of 6/2/11: I have been on the magnesium regimen for 6 months; I have also cut out all dairy for that period. I had a lipid test which showed I had a drop of 33 points in my LDL, which may have been due to the lack of dairy (I was following the 2010 book, WHITEWASH: THE DISTURBING TRUTH ABOUT COW'S MILK AND YOUR HEALTH.) Regardless, my HDL did not rise one digit, something THE MAGNESIUM MIRACLE book predicted. I am continuing for another six month with the adequate dosage of magnesium with calcium to see if there will be an effect on my HDL. I will report back around November 21, 2011. UPDATE as of Nov. 21, 2011: Somewhat disappointing. After one whole year on the magnesium my number only rose 4 points: from 42 to 46. Regardless, I still benefit from magnesium's elimination of my cramps.

Literally and figuratively a miracle cure
Unbelievable I first heard Carolyn on a radio show and she claimed magnesium could cure anxiety and it basically tied into a bunch of other symptoms I had. This is not a real scientific study but just my own observations: Anxiety: I had been to the ER for this, they thought it was asthma and gave me the nebulizer treatment until I couldn't stand up anymore and then let me go unsure of what the real problem was. Later, another doctor diagnosed anxiety and gave me an Rx for xanax. It makes me feel real stupid so I avoid taking it. Then I heard Carolyn talk about magnesium and figured I would try it. I was in Mexico at the time and the pharmacia gave me a form that looked like salt crystals and I mixed it with some juice. I felt immediate relief (it was years back, but seemed like immediate.) I travel so often that it is hard to find so when it would run out, I would relapse into anxiety in airports, odd countries, etc. It felt like an asthma attack, my chest would tighten, and basically could not breathe but inhalers would not help. I finally bought the book and began reading it. I picked up a bunch of different types of magnesium and had great results. Sleep: I sleep much better when taking magnesium. Gas and bloating: Carolyn mentions magnesium chloride when taken on an empty stomach aids digestion. Basically the stomach acid breaks apart the magnesium and chloride forming more hydrochloric acid and absorbing magnesium. I was experiencing hot air balloon gas and bloating and it is gone now. Crazy after being so miserable for so long. Eye twitch: I developed and eyelid twitch that would not stop. Again, Carolyn mentions magnesium cures this, and it did!!! Lower back pain: My brother and I are tall, 6'3" and suffer from lower back pain, as does a lot of our family members. My brother was at the chiropractor 2-3 times/ month, after magnesium, he hasn't been there!!! And mine doesn't even bother me. Basically magnesium acts as a natural muscle relaxer and allows the muscles to work the way they are supposed to. Sensitive teeth: I just noticed this one after increasing my magnesium intake to 3 or 4 doses a day of different types. I was in Jamaica and all the water the hotel would give me came with ice in it. I was so thirsty I started chomping the ice when trying to guzzle down the water. Normally I would get the electric shock of a spike going through my teeth and into my jawbone and would cringe. I noticed flossing doesn't cause the shooting pain either. Magnesium? Coincidence? I don't know but it is awesome having my teeth not hurt! Fat around the waist: I gained the freshman 15 to 30 and never really lost it. Carolyn mentions how magnesium somehow helps the body utilize fat that it cannot get to for some reason. Weight is starting to drop off from around my waist without changing my diet. I'm real skeptical but down 10 lbs and my regular jeans are loose. Cramping: When I hit the gym and do 3-4 reps of heavy lifting my muscles cramp up. It's been this way since high school. 15 years later its the same. The book claims it will help reduce cramping but I still cramp up. I'm juicing up my magnesium dosage and will keep you posted. *Movements* I had some brutal movements when I first started, keep a toilet close by! I find myself telling strangers walking down the street about it. Such a life saver. My life has completely changed since getting on magnesium. Carolyn, Thank you so much! I hope you read these reviews.

The Magnesium Miracle
After reading this book, along with also having first-hand knowledge about the importance of magnesium, which indeed is a "miracle," I cannot understand why more information is not coming forward on this most important nutrient, the missing link in regaining your health. Back last winter, my wife became concerned when I had difficulty getting out of a chair, was having horrible hip pain and back pain. She researched, then started growing concerned that maybe I was showing early signs of Parkinson's. Needless to say, the research turned up several important things, but most importantly, magnesium deficiency seemed to be a number one factor causing many illnesses. Around this time frame, we found out about magnesium w/SRT (magnesium malate; malic acid), and it literally changed our lives overnight. That magnesium w/SRT is the one that was definitely a magnesium miracle for us. Then, around this same point in time, just about the same time we found magnesium w/SRT, we also found out about Dr. Carolyn Dean's book, and this has been such a blessing. You can tell others how it changed you overnight, but if you're deficient, it really will, and most people are deficient in magnesium. This book is so well written, so comprehensive in revealing the importance of the benefits of magnesium and just what a magnesium deficiency causes. This book is not only written for health-care professionals, but it's also for laypeople such as my wife and I. This book is for everyone. It's for people with depression, chest pain, migraines, muscle spasms, nerve problems, asthma, leg cramps, fatigue, hypertension, insomnia, and the list goes on and on. For the first time in over 20 years, my wife is free of back pain and horrible muscle spasms in her back. I can now get up from a chair normally, walk, do all the things that I need to do without back and hip pain. Dr. Dean is a wonderful expert in magnesium deficiencies, and she would tell you personally, I believe, it's time to take charge of your health!

Mindblowing read with great article sites/studies
Great read. I read it in a weekend. Easy to read, and you can easily skip chapters after the first one (intro & understanding of what magnesium deficiency is) to fit what you need to know right now. As much as I enjoyed information and supplement suggestions for heart health, I needed concise information about insulin resistence. Dr. Dean gives suggested supplement doses and additional support needed for special afflictions. Lots of notations referencing articles in peer reviewed journals as well as studies performed in the realm of magnesium supplementation aiding different conditions one may have or have had experienced. If you think you have magnesium deficiency, which a majority of the populations do, by all means get educated, learn the different forms of magnesium supplemention, and give yourself 3 months for a chance to change your life/health. I thought it was a well written thought out book, and will suggest to many others, and have on my reference shelf for my practice.

Vitamine/Minerale Mängel - die Epidemie des Jahrhundert!
Dieses Buch und dann noch diese beiden: - ISBN-13: 978-1491243824 (Vitamin D3 High Doses) TOP! - ISBN-13: 978-1884995699 (Vitamin B12) TOP!
