Everything is Simpler in 10 Dimensions
I’ve read a few of Michio Kaku’s books and I’ve really enjoyed them, which is why I decided to read this somewhat “older” book. Dr. Kaku is an excellent popularizer with a lucid and down to earth writing style and he has a modest and open minded way of approaching a subject. As the book is a little bit outdated at this point and because I have a couple of objections I rated it four stars, but it is a very “mind opening” book that I strongly recommend. The book takes us on a journey through the discovery-history of higher dimensions and the quest to unify the laws of physics. It introduces us to Riemannian geometry and explains how forces can be viewed as consequences of geometry in higher dimensions (Hyperspace) a concept that was later used in the General Theory of Relativity, Kaluza-Klein theory as well superstring theory. The laws of physics become more unified, simpler and more beautiful if you add a few dimensions. He convincingly makes the case that you can discover the secrets of the Universe by peering into Hyperspace. The book also discusses topics such as the history of modern physics, relativity, quantum physics, the standard model, GUTs, super gravity, black holes, the big bang, parallel universes, etc. Towards the end of the book he is discussing the fate of the Universe and the fate of human civilization, and the threats we face from the potential of nuclear war, global warming, and possible collisions with asteroids. The book does not go into depth on any of the multiple topics discussed. It is not that kind of a book. However, on some minor topics I found it to be misleading, particularly on the topics of parallel universes and “Schrödinger’s cat”. For example, he states on page 261 “To Schrödinger, the idea of thinking about cats that are neither dead nor alive was the height of absurdity, yet nevertheless the experimental confirmation of quantum mechanics forces us to this conclusion.” The last part is simply incorrect. This is an interpretation issue, not an experimental issue, and it is sorted out in different ways by more modern interpretations of quantum physics such as the ensemble interpretation and the relational interpretation of quantum physics, or via "decoherence". As for me, when I as a young student taking classes in Quantum Physics at the end of the 1980’s I adopted what was essentially a pre-cursor to the relational interpretation because of what I noticed when I tried to perform Galileo transforms on quantum wave functions. There’s no real contradiction and there are no multiple worlds (universes) needed to explain this. I’ve seen other popularizers confuse people the same way, and I think it just turns people off. Anyway, other than the above minor complaint, I think this was a very enjoyable and interesting book that I am very glad that I’ve read.

Just my humble thanks for so rewarding experience as I got from reading this book. It is the first time I really understand the conceptual basis of Einstein's Relativity by grasping the meaning of the equality "force=geometry". This concept of force is as beatiful as profound. And it came so early as 1854 in a legendary lecture by Bernhard Riemann. In fact, the chapter on Riemann was a complete discovery to me. It was a revelation to know the place of Physics in the work of Riemann, whom I only knew from a mathematical perspective. I never knew of the large cultural influence of the Fourth Dimension after Riemann in general in late 19th Century Society (why?). The visual metaphors of Charles Hinton to illustrate a fourth spatial dimension (Hinton's Cubes), and the science fiction tales on hypercubes are simply delicious (if you've watched the "Cube" films, you must read these pages). Then after learning that a time-fourth dimension had already been put down by H.G. Wells in his "Time Machine" I was in full context to enter Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. The deep meaning of the equivalence principle (force=geometry) came naturally: Riemann the mathematician and Einstein the physicist coming together in a sort of inevitable, fated meeting. An ongoing fate that brought the fifth dimensional theory of Kaluza-Klein in the 20's, ending up recently in the Supergravity and Superstrings theories. It was a revelation too to behold the place of Quantum Physics in this "hyperspace living thread". The panorama of Quantum Theory is unfolded with unsurpassed clarity and scope. Ultimately this book was superb to me in communicating clearly and brilliantly the origins and sense of modern Physics, from where it comes and to where it might be heading. An unvaluable source of information ... and inspiration! Thanks!

Fascinating and ultimately readable!
I've always been attracted to physics from a layman's viewpoint, but I never had an aptitude or patience for the field of higher mathematics. This book is a virtual textbook or syllabus for the history of the evolution of physics and the fields of higher mathematics up through 1998 when it was originally published. I now want to search for any updated research to string theory and the 10 dimensions... very clearly written! Kaku writes immaculately!

Asmiov and Gamow rolled in one!
We finally have a science non-fiction writer of our times, just like the 50's had Asimov, George Gamow, Clarke etc. Michio Kaku's books fall somewhere between books such as Tao of Physics and slightly drier reads such as those by Brian Greene and Hawking. There are no practical ways to imagine dimensions beyond three, but he comes up with so many fascinating analogies that you feel like you are tantalizingly close to understanding them. The thought examples of cylindrical spaces are extremely fascinating and the ramifications are so mind boggling that you can imagine twilight zones within twilight zones! Somewhere in between the book gets heavier, with mathematical descriptions of Strings and SuperStrings, but even among these pages you will find brief historical notes and anecdotes about Physicists and Mathematicians, that will lift your waning interests. But then the book emerges back into the layman's three dimensional world and the reading gets breezier with more descriptions of star life-cycles and black holes and worm holes. Overall, its a thoroughly enjoyable read for non-scientific folks and others for whom it may been a long while since they read a physics text book. I really wish such books had been available when I was in undergraduate and graduate schools. I would have probably appreciated the dry quantum physics math more.

breathtaking journey of a master physicist
Kaku has been a favorite physics author of mine because of his ease in explaining complex physics theories of the universe. This book on string theory development has key foundations to give you the training wheels. Want to get serious later? Get that doctorate from a place like MIT. The book is bit dated with a 1994 publication. Since then we have seen the discovery of the God particle with the CERN collider. Also, some physicists have propose that light speed has not always been constant, but slowed over time. These developments would invite a second edition. However, the foundations are a must and Kaku does a splendid job. His other books cover many topics that would interest the reader.

Great book to put modern theories of physics in layman's terms, but offers more for those who are interested
This book has been a great read. It presents some really interesting analogies to help the reader grasp some of the more obtuse ideas behind relativity and hyperspace in particular. While it does present the theories in very high-level, general terms, it also offers the reader some insight into the more complicated mathematics behind the theories. It was a very entertaining read and has armed me with many more ideas of particular aspects of modern physics that I'd like to research in more detail.
