1941 Heritage Press edition
I collect Heritage Press editions, mainly classical works of literature that I have read in my youth and remember with great fondness. One particular favorite is "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's macabre tales are effectively chilling and even all these years later have the ability to shock. I own several editions of Poe's works and am especially interested in the illustrated editions as each artist has a singular style that enriches my appreciation of Poe's tales. This 1941 Heritage Press edition has beautiful marbled board covers and cloth-bound spine. The book comes in a slipcover but my purchase did not unfortunately come with a Sandglass pamphlet. The book itself contains an introduction by Vincent Starrett and photogravures of the original aquatints by William Sharp. The tales contained in this edition are:• A Descent into the Maelstrom• The Assignation• The Cask of Amontillado• The Fall of the House of Usher• The Gold-Bug• The Oval Portrait• The Black Cat• MS. Found in a Bottle• Hop-Frog• Eleonora• William Wilson• Berenice• The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar• Metzengerstein• Ligeia• Shadow- A Parable• Silence - A Fable• The Oblong Box• The Mystery of Marie Roget• The Premature Burial• The Tell-Tale Heart• The Pit and the Pendulum• The Purloined Letter• The Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade• A Predicament• The Masque of the Red Death• Morella• The Devil in the Belfry• The Murders in the Rue Morgue

World's Greatest Literature
This book is part of a beautiful 20-volume series of classic books, all put out sometime in the 1930s. The books themselves are beautiful and durable, and the books in the complete set include:THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII, by Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton (Lord Lytton),VANITY FAIR, A Novel without a Hero, William Makepeace Thackeray,SCARLET LETTER, A Romance, Nathaniel Hawthorne,TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION, Edgar Allan Poe, (this volume)THE VICAR OF WAKEFIELD, Oliver Goldsmith, with portrait and 20 illustrations,THE SKETCH-BOOK, Washington Irving, vol. 11,TREASURE ISLAND, A Story of the Spanish Main, Robert Louis Stevenson,ESSAYS, Ralph Waldo Emerson, 399 pp, vol. 13,THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BENVENUTO CELLINI, A Florentine Artist, containing a variety of information respecting the arts and the history of the sixteenth century, vol. 15.I had them all when I was a child, and by some mistake or other I lost this volume. Luckily, Amazon had it. :) These books are all true classics in the best sense, and cover a wide variety of genres and styles. As for this one, it's wonderful--all of Poe's most famous short stories are collected in a single volume. Need I say more?

Worked for me
I used my copy for a Poe altered art book, and wanted the Rackam illustrations. Worked for me.

Beautiful illustrations
I like the pictures from the exquisite Harry Clarke. That's why I bought the book. In Czech a similar edition was published, but with other illustrations. I just wonder, how many more of them are out there? Artcyclopedia might help...

Gorgeous edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination
I've loved the stories of Edgar Allan Poe since I was a child and every October, as part of my Halloween tradition, I revisit his writings. Lately, I've been watching some of the classic film adaptations of some of Poe's more popular works, and been reading the stories right after, just to mix things up a little, and it has been an enjoyable experience.I've been collecting the Easton Press' Collector's Editions and the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written Series for several years and I can't gush enough about the impeccable quality of these books. Each has a unique design on the covers, in 22K gold accents, and has beautiful genuine leather bindings, moire endpapers, and a satin ribbon page marker, all of which are hallmarks of the Easton Press' collector's editions. Even though many of these books were printed in the 1970s, the archival quality paper ensures these books will continue to endure for many more years, and will enhance any collector's library. This edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination will make an excellent gift for an ardent Poe fan.

It looks like it belongs in the study or library of an English Gentleman
The stories are well-known, but this edition isn't. It's a well-designed Easton Press book. This means that it looks like it belongs in the study or library of an English Gentleman. Even as a used book in good condition, this makes a really classy gift - even if that gift is for you (as mine was).

Very nice vendor communication.
I received the book very promptly, it was carefully and beautifully packaged. Though the quality of the edition is not the best - illustrations are pretty blurry. But vendor did everything in her power to make this purchase a nice experience.

What You Get Is Not What You Purchase
The book I received was not the book pictured. It was Tales Of Mystery & Imagination, but I made the purchase for this particular version of hardcover. What I got was a totally different version. They would not accept a complete return.

Disappointment
One of the best writer's and illustrators in the same book. How can I go wrong? The illustrations are at way to low a resolution and are just blurry blobs. Very disappointing.

Poor quality
When I opened the packet, I could smell the glue and from the print it seemed that the book was not authentic but photocopied. I've asked customer care at Amazon to enquire into the same since I paid for the hardcover and expected good quality. Scheduled a return of the book to Amazon
