The Ultimate Finale (Review #382)
I ended up reading this series out of order. Having recently re-read Ewing's first Ultimates series I was excited to find out how it ended so I skipped ahead to this the final volume of his second series. Since I don't know when or even if I'll be able to get to the first volume I've decided to go ahead and review this now. I find it very difficult to review. This volume stands very much in line with everything Ewing had done prior with these characters and concepts, but here he takes the more abstract ideas and dials them up to eleven. It's impressive work but it maybe goes a bit too far for newer readers who might find everything a little dense to read through. I personally loved it but knowing this going in is important. The only real shakeup storywise is the milestone issue, which reintroduces elements of the original Ultimates series back into this newer iteration. It really manages to bring back that old-school Ultimate Universe feel I've been missing since that imprint ended in 2015. The art for this volume is really a mixed bag. Aud Koch's work on the first half of the book is in my opinion terrible. It looks ugly and unfinished but with Dan Brown's colors it has a cool lighting effect so there is that. Travel Foreman returns around the one hundredth issue and though it's not as good as previous volumes it is serviceable and his renditions of the original Ultimates are great.5/5

Fantastic
Al Ewing is one of the best writer's in the game. This story goes to the highest cosmic levels of the Marvel Universe.

Fabulous ending
The many concepts presented here are cosmic Marvel at its best. The Maker is everything bad about Reed Richards. Our Reed shows glimpses of his personality flaws occasionally, but his inner goodness counters them. More Monica and Adam please

A fair wrap-up to the series.
A fair wrap-up to the series. Seems a little rushed, given the high stakes.

Don't buy this
No one should buy this book. The art is grotesquely inadequate & ugly. Marvel's problem is it wants to make money from publishing as many series as it can but cannot hire enough good artists to draw said series, and will hand the art reins to absolutely anyone. This title began with excellent name artist Kenneth Rocafort drawing but for this volume could do no better than some nobody whose penciling is on the level of something a 5-year-old scribbles to stick on his mother's refrigerator. Yes, it's THAT BAD. Marvel deserves no loyalty for the wretched art it pushes out.Additionally, this title has been handicapped by the fact 2 of its woman characters are written as abysmally unlikable. After buying this series I want never to read another featuring Carol Danvers or America Chavez again.
