After only fairly recently "discovering" the Cocteau Twins, I found this album to be what I have come to expect from them. While it's not Heaven or Last Vegas it's certainly a gem in its own right. "Bluebeard" and "Summerhead" are by far my favorites. However, its definitely an album in the sense that it's a piece of art intended to be listened to the entire way through, not to have your favorites cherry picked while ignoring those less than idyllic tracks.I certainly recommend it.

I am an avid CT fan. I have purchased all the remasters. I have to say that the presentation of Four Calender Cafe is different not necessarily better. You are able to hear more space between the instruments but it comes off a bit harsh. I still recommend buying. I most likely will play the remastered version when I listen. The new liner notes are excellent.

This could have been a five star album if it weren't for the fact that not all these songs are that great. Yes, I'm going to get blasted for that, but c'est la vie. Four-Calendar Café has one of those songs you'll always remember. For me, it's Bluebeard. I can remember listening to it a lot on the radio and then a lot more when I bought the disc. This was one helluva song with one helluva sound. The swirling sounds reminded me a lot of Dream Academy's In A Northern Town from their album Dream Academy.Sadly, this album cannot hold up to that song. Bluebeard is fantastic from the opening chord all the way to the fading of the final chord. The swirling sound is also reminiscent of Enya's Ebudæ's introduction from her album Shepherd Moons. Had they been able to pull that off, in my opinion, this could have been a serious group to be reckoned with.
