Sober Living for the Revolution: Hardcore Punk, Straight Edge, and Radical Politics

Tells Half the Story
The interviews are good, but there are no viewpoints from the more conservative side of Hardcore Straight Edge. Most of the viewpoints are from the far left Antifa types, very little (if any) moderate and absolutely nothing of the Right at all. The end result is there are decent interviews, like the one with Ian MacKaye, but the rest seems to be heavily far left, oriented. Omitting moderates and right, essentially bypasses 60 to 70 percent of the movement.

Eh, it's alright.
The best section of the book was the interview with Ian McKaye. I thought his views were the most interesting and sensible. The rest is a compendium of PC nonsense, anarchist politics, and a smattering of interesting insights.

Open Mind
Made me open my mind to a variety of different social cultures. I denounced my straight edge views when the scene was getting too violent and pointless. I understand what being straight edge is like and this book really describes not just straight edge but a lot of other cultures that go along with it.

Straight Edge Compendium
When I first bought this book, I expected it to be a history of straight edge written by one author. Instead, I received a collection of interviews and essays from characters within the straight edge scene. I'm not complaining, only describing what you can expect if you purchase this book. The book is divided into five sections: bands, scenes, manifestos, reflections, and perspectives. The author makes an explicit effort to focus on the international straight edge scenes in places such as Sweden, Israel, and Brazil. The interview with Ian MacKaye was interesting partly because he is such as well spoken and articulate guy. Then, near the end, Kuhn includes a series of essays and interviews covering the feminist and queer straight edge scenes, which I thought was a little bit off the beaten path but interesting nonetheless.Joe[...]

Very disapointing
Despite a cool cover and a catchy name, the book itself doesn't really give substantial info about the history of the movement. It mostly consists of subjective (almost militant) essays about straight edge culture.
