Highly recommend for people who prefer picture over words
Purchased this after someone shared to my local (New Zealand) fungi group a PDF of the circles from these books. It is a unique way of ID'ing, and I liked the look of them. The authors released them to the public domain. So I planned to print out in color and bind. So I could use them myself. But the printing costs at local print place was going to be $NZ70, so I figured I should just buy them. Finally arrived a few weeks ago via amazon, as I had to place a pre-order due to not yet being printed. They are wonderfully illustrated and I learned that you get both volumes for the ~$NZ110 I paid, which is pretty cool.Have waited a couple of weeks before posting about them since I wanted to use them a few times to see if they are actually good to use, and not just look good. My verdict is that they are wonderfully to use. They are designed for visual work, so focus on photos instead of text. This definitely suits me, and I have found the circle nature of ID'ing much easier to follow that keying things out. This is likely because I am a visual-spatial learning rather than a words person. The only downside is they focus on Europe, so can only really get down to genus level for NZ, although obviously a large percentage of urban fungi are likely to be european. The other downside is they don't use any common names, and common names I find much easier to remember than the scientific, so maybe not a downside as it will force me to learn the proper names.I would call this and Shirley's book on NZ fungi my two books that I will use most going forward. So overall highly recommend even if you don't live in Europe.

Love the pictures, a lot of cool new species, descriptions aren't too bad
One of the best mushrooms identification book purchased that I have ever made. That a lot of cool species from EU that come in 2 books for the price that I paid.Pictures were really good, and descriptions are not too bad, well there were some that I wish they would spent more detail on separating similar looking species in one genus.I also like that the books came as hardcover so it probably will last me for a long time.

Best mushroom guide.
I heard about this two volume set from another Author. It's a hefty price tag, but so worth having. The way families are laid out in wheels, makes it so easy to understand and learn. Anyone who wants to learn about mushrooms needs these books.

best mushroom book for Europe
Great book. Pics of both top and gills. Well organized. Clear. Includes lookalikes. Not a field guide. You definitely won't fit this in your pocket. But it's an excellent guide.Worth every penny.

Great books, as in 2 volumes!I love it!However, make sure you get both volumes! Low lives trying to trick you in overprized 1 book sale!

You won't find a better set of fungi books.
I am not an expert on fungi, but not a beginner either, so was looking for a book that was more comprehensive than the ones I already have. This set was recommended by a mycologist, and I must say it has far exceeded my expectations. I think they are good value for money, having over 1700 pages, all with wonderful colour photos, and I highly recommend it. The only slight problem is that many of the names have changed, some fungi have been moved into another genus, so they can be hard to find in the books if you only know them by the old name. However the keys are great and easy to use. Not books for taking into the field though, they are large, weighty tomes!

Very comprehensive and well presented book on fungi in Europe (1700 pages)
Very beautiful and comprehensive books (2 heavy voluemes and 1,700 pages) about Fungi or mushrooms in Europe. The presentation is excellent, as well as the categorisation of the mushrooms. It is full with perfect photos of fungi from different angles. There is an indication of edibility ...but no recipients...well, that should be an other story. The authors have developed as-they-call-it: ' wheels for the Basidiomycota' and fungi are presented in a grouped manner. The names of the mushrooms are in Latin, thus, your native European nation's/tribe's name should be searched separately. It is a truly beautiful book, possibly the best and most comprehensive Funigi book that one can purchase right now. I keep looking and admiring the 2 volumes already for the last week!Big thanks to the authors!a mushroom person :)PS. I wish somebody would publish a book about the medicin properties of ...all those mushrooms/fungi...that would be another crazy work for those who know the properties.

latin names
What a fantastic book! I love how it includes everything. Well worth the money for the amount of research thats gone into it. Is it definitive? or are latin names changing? if so its unclear what they used to be. First fungi I looked at cross referencing from 'Fungi' by Andy Overall was not in it!(Argaricus pallens) Name change? Second one i looked at was Birch polypore to see what they where calling it and it was Piptoporus bitulinus the old name, not Fomitopsis betulina which we call it today. It must be hard to get it right with so much changing and how complex it is. Or has it taken years to write? Probably.. It still takes pride place on my book shelf.

An essential addition to your fungi library
With fungi the learning never seems to stop. These two volumes join an already substantial collection of books on this topic on my bookshelf...well, except for volume 1 of FoTE which has been living on my bedside table since I purchased the set. It has quickly becoming one of my favourite reference books.
