Not very user friendly to setup, but it works when you fully understand it
This thing works on the premise of text messages that sends you a location link of google maps. I chose to have a prepaid "pay as you go" SIM card with t-mobile (USA) and I get charged $0.10 per Text message. You can set this thing up to automatically send text message every couple minutes, however I don't use that feature as it can rack up cost very fast. I use this to keep track of my son on the way to and from school. Once you set this thing up, you can use it "on demand" and find out where it is by calling it then getting a text message back within seconds with a google map location. For the price its a great tracker and battery life is awesome. Whats great is that I don't have to pay for anything when I'm not using it.The downside is if I did choose to track this device with auto tracker (sending text messages back automatically) I's not so user friendly in the sense you have to open each text message link to see tracking history. Also it floods your phone with text messages when you do have auto track on. Otherwise it works great. Other kid tracking devices out on the market don't work in real time. I read that several other devices takes several minutes to update location very few devices have on-demand location feature. That's why I chose this device. It lets me know where my son is when I want to know "on demand".It might not be very user-friendly to setup and its not great at viewing location history, but it works. My son it too young to use the calling feature, but its nice to know this device has it so he can call me or my wife at a push of a button (you have to setup this feature).Update: Getting a SIM card from T-mobile wasn't easy. They want to know the device and they never heard of this thing before. I walked into a T-mobile store and the associate insisted I pay $40 a month for a "prepaid" plan and never heard of their pay as you go plan. I walked out and called t-mobile. Took a bit of explaining over the phone to get them to send me a SIM card. Just tell them you need the large "old" sim size. I choose pay as you go plan and pay $3.00 a month plus 0.10 per text/minuteUpdate 03/08/2016: GPS signal started to fail. The device can't barely keep GPS signal anymore. I really liked this device when it worked. Now it barely can find a signal.

For my 3 year old runner
Got this for my 3 year old who is a runner. I'd put it in his pocket whenever we were at the grocery store, park, anywhere in public. He kept pushing the buttons and calling me, but then I learned I could put it into tracker mode and the buttons became disabled! Love all the different modes you can put it in. download the app and at any time you can get a pin drop on Google Maps wherever the device is. Requires a SIM Card and an extra line on your family plan or you can get a pay-as-you-go SIM Card.

I told him he is way too young but then saw this on Amazon and liked the idea of a GPS tracker because I am ...
I got this for my 6 year old for Christmas. He's growing up in a generation where all of his family members have cell phones so I did expect him to want his own somewhat early but not this early. I told him he is way too young but then saw this on Amazon and liked the idea of a GPS tracker because I am a little overprotective. I got him the Prepaid SIM Starter Kit from TMobile ($1.07 total including shipping with a coupon code) as the other reviewer advised and told him he could open 2 presents early (this and the SIM card.) He wasn't thrilled because this is obviously not a cell phone but when he realized he had his own cell phone number and when I called the number and this rang, he was over the moon. He has called me more than 15 times today. Most of them while he was in other parts of the house. Numerous times when I left the house so he could repeatedly ask what I was doing and where I was at. This is a great way to show him responsibility (keeping track of it, charging it, and not using it at school) and give him his own "space" even though he can only call Mom, Dad, and Grandma. He was more than willing to accept this as a compromise to having a real cell phone. REALLY great! We keep it in "call" mode so that we can call him. The only thing I have a problem with is TMobile and not about this. I can't setup an account online because it wants to text the number a code. I'm sure TMobile will fix if I call and this has nothing to do with the product.Update 1/14/15 -After the first week, we were no longer able to hear my son at all when he called us. He was talking to us, he could hear us, but we couldn't hear him. Contacted ModFamily and was told to try resetting the phone... when that didn't work, they said they would send a new one. I asked what I should do with the old one but didn't get a response. 3 days later I followed up but still didn't get a response. I have yet to receive a replacement and that was almost 2 weeks ago... I will delete this if I happen to receive it, but something tells me I won't be.

Not good so far
The inside of the package arrived damaged, as per the picture added to this review. That would not have been a deal-breaker had the unit worked, but I did not. In fact, the charging cable that came with it had been tempered with, I assume by someone who previously purchased this very unit, and would not fit inside the charging slot of the tracker. The remaining items included were clearly all repackaged which indicates that this was a return and that the company didn't take the time to investigate whether the unit was usable before sending it out to a new costumer. Very disappointing, as I believe this tracker could indeed be very useful to families with young children. I intend to give them another chance and order a new unit after I return this one.
