José Mourinho - Special Leadership: Special Leadership
K**.
A beautiful read...
In Special Leadership, we're given a view into the psyche, philosophy and ultimately the coaching methodology of Mourinho. For a while now, we've seen Mourinho's meteoric rise from lowly Leiria to now of Chelsea, and one thing always stands out about his teams - they are inherently autonomous in the way they play on the field, which we learn, is by design.Mourinho is a character that's hard to get close to - you can watch his media snippets, his interviews or documentaries about him - but you can never get too close to the personal thoughts of the enigmatic Mourinho. Here, you learn why he does the things he does, the things he says... his focus, his charisma, all of the qualities that mesh together to create a "special leader."Possibly one of the best books I've read on management, coaching and philosophy. I highly recommend this to any soccer fanatic, coach, player, or anyone looking to improve their management skills.5/5

The book is easy and interesting to read
The book is easy and interesting to read, especially when using the real situation of Mourinho to illustrate some traditional leadership principles.

Good Read - Love how the book connects theory, philosophy, and coaching style to explain Mourinho
This book really digs into the detail on the composition of Jose Mourinho's leadership style. Complexity theory (the whole is greater than the sum of its parts) is the overarching theory that guides Mourinho's coaching methods, which clearly explains why he is a big proponent of the Global training method (combining all aspects technical, tactical, physical, mental) into his training exercises. Found it to be an interesting read and very thought provoking.

Two Stars
I want to read about Mourino, not other people's leadership philosophy.

Some good nuggets, but overall disappointing
I was really looking forward to reading this book but up to this point it's been very rough going so far - I've had great difficulty getting through the book without having to re-read sections due to the writing. I'm wondering if the cause for the difficulty is due to the translation as I've noted a number of unusual phrases that have made sentences overly complicated, in my opinion. Also, given that the writer is a close friend of the subject, the tone of the writing seems to show a distinct bias, so in my analysis I feel the need to take this into account. In spite of these issues though, I have liked hearing anecdotes from players and coaches as these have proven the most insightful thus far. I may adjust my review after completing the book, but at this point, I doubt I'll need to.

Too much jargon
There are some interesting quotes from players that Mourinho has managed, and from Mourinho himself. These convey a real sense of how Mourinho sets about management. The trouble is, one has to wade through a lot of wordy modern management theory which adds little to the insights that these quotations reveal quite naturally.
