Live at the Whiskey 'a Go-Go

I have not listened to all of the X catalog. I am a fan, but not an aficionado. And I think live albums are hit and miss. But this is a great, well performed, high energy live set which hits all the best songs and then some. I think if I buy the X Unclogged album, also live with very unique takes of their stuff, I will have what I need. Some bands are just better live.

Still together after all these years of craziness, X rocks the house with this album of road tested classics. I was lucky to see them play live in Chapel Hill and they were wonderful. This album manages to capture the magic that results from this group that started way back in the 80's. If you are hankering for a trip down memory lane, then this is the place to start. Jammed onto one disc are twenty one excellent songs recorded at the infamous Whisky a Go-Go, the band is in fine form as they rock the house. Blazing through all the hits on this album makes this a wonderful memory maker as there are some delicious cuts featured here. X is one of my favorite bands and this album shows why they have been selling out shows for years. Give me "The Once Over Twice" or "Riding with Mary" and I will be a happy camper. Turn it up loud and make the neighbors angry! Kick out the jams!

AWESOME CD. Purchased this on cassette way back when then on CD twice. Excellent performance, great tracklist. I love John Doe and Exene's dueling vocals. It's in my top 20 of all-time go-to fun CDS. Been listening to this CD for 20+ years and never tire of it. X's studio CDs are great, but nothing beats the feel of a live performance. This CD is perfect for dipping your toes into X for the first time. A real nice mix of tracks. Enjoy.

Even if you don't like live albums (like myself) this is one live record you should not pass up. As other reviewers have mentioned it plays like a greatest hits plus it includes two previously unreleased gems, "Skin Deep Town, "So Long" and a super rocking version of the Knitters "Call of the Wreckin' Ball". "Around My Heart" sounds so much better live I honestly experienced it all over again almost as a brand new song. In addition the recording quality is incredible. The power, the energy, and the talent of X comes across beautifully (yes even w/o Zoom). This record Rocks!

This is one of the best live albums ever! My love for X's music started with this release. 'Live At The Whisky A Go-Go..' is proof positive that X is one of the best American bands ever, and that Elektra Records didn't give the band the "proper" exposure it deserved. However, I'm still disappointed to see with this re-issue that Rhino didn't rectify what Elektra had done with the original CD release, which was omitting the tracks "Just Another Perfect Day" and "True Love" to facilitate it being on one disc. At the time of its original release, 'Live At The Whisky A Go-Go..' was also available on double LP (vinyl) and double length cassette. On "True Love", it's great hearing Exene tell the audience that they're making a record of the show and the skepticism she expresses about its release. To hear it in its proper context, I recommend searching for the vinyl version if you still own a turntable. Seeing how vinyl is making a comeback, maybe Rhino will re-issue it on 180-Gram vinyl as well.

X is the best, and this proves it. This is going to the desert island with me, along with, of course,The Beatles, Dylan, Hendrix, Zeppelin, and Nirvana.

One of my favorites, a great sampling of one of the 80's best bands. Definitely worth adding to your collection

The best live show I may have ever seen in my life was X at the Orpheum in Boston back in the 80s (Warren Zevon was the opening act, but was so loud he was painful to endure. Too bad because I found his music interesting enough...) I've recently been listening to this album again and I had a revelation - this may have the most competent rock guitar playing I have ever heard on a live recording. So for that reason alone it merits a listen. Add in the fact that the band is X and this becomes a "must have" recording. Outstanding musical quality.
