Burgess provides an easy and informative read
This is THE BOOK for the history of the oboe. It includes discussions of its development as well as commentary on popular pieces and performers through the centuries. Burgess provides an easy and informative read; and Haynes always adds amazing clarity to Baroque history and performance practice. Highly recommend for all oboe and general instrument historians.

THE BETTER HISTORICAL OBOE BOOK
The Oboe by Burgess and Haynes is the better historical book about oboe that I read. Have a concise discography and biography of great oboists in the History of Music. The illusttration are beautiful and clear. For all oboists very interest in History of own instrumet, is a good recommendation.I'm a begginer in oboe, but I very interest in History. The Oboe by Burgess&Haynes will be the good companion.Best RegardsNizaor Ennes,Telecommunications TechnicianGreat fan of Oboe & Bassoon Music and HistorySanta Catarina - Brasil

GREAT BOOK
Very detailed. Cleared up a lot of history questions for me and I have been playing for 40 years! Should be on every oboist's shelf.

Good book
Nice history, but not quite enough history on some of the unique trends and technical differences in 20th century oboes.

lost in the past on an isle
What to say about an author specifically well-known for his historical instrument research in baroque and early classical oboe tradition. This book claims a wider scope and concerning to that it fails. The book is worth as a basis of sources, but I would hesitate to rely on its proper and appropriate use in this book.Upmost ahstonishing is the wrong illustration of the interactions of oboist's training in Europe in the romantic and early modern aera, and he fails in even trying to see or hear ( at his age , hmm) what's happening nowadays. The mentioned Professors of Paris Conservatory Triebert and Vogt were part of German oboe family, H. Winschermann , Albrecht Mayer and I. Goritzki all studied at Paris. And F. Leleux playing in Bavarian radio and teaching at Munich, how would that work with a schisma between France and Germany...?Reading that passages it makes me careful on trusting the rest of the content. The consequences of research should allways be clearly seperated from analysis. This is the killing ctitic on this book.3 points for the sources , the work, the illustrations and for mercy ;-(
