I have a laptop and when I connect the keyboard to it. it tells me to connect through Bluetooth then what's the point of the dongle?.

the keyboard connects via bluetooth by design. im assuming your laptop has built in BT . the dongle is for if your trying to use it with a device that does not have BT built into it.

Backlight duration? Does it stay on while using or do you have to hit the red star button every time?

When back light mode is on it will go into a sleep mode after certain amount of time of inactivity. Whem any button or mouse is bumped/pressed the controller will light back up
