Q: what do you need the cord for if it is battery operated and how long will the batteries last in the "cheetah speed" mode?

The fan runs off a 12 volt car, RV or boat battery. It is also available for 24 volt systems. The cord is used to connect the fan to the DC system in the vehicle or boat. On my boat, I connected a Blue Sea 12-volt DC plug (available on Amazon) to the end of the supplied cord and plug it into the 12-volt port in my main cabin. For the 12 volt version, the power power draw for the 3 speeds are 0.15, 0.18 and 0.27 amps according to the instruction manual. The amp-hour rating and condition of the battery the fan is being connected to will determine how long you can run this fan in the "cheetah speed" mode before the battery draws down to 50% of its rated amp-hours (maximum drawdown recommended in Nigel Caulder's Boatowner's Mechanical & Electrical Manual, 4th edition). Assuming you have a relatively new fully charged 100 amp-hour rated 12 volt battery and you are only drawing power to run one of these fans, you could run it at top speed for well over 100 hours.
