Cold Antler Farm: A Memoir of Growing Food and Celebrating Life on a Scrappy Six-Acre Homestead

Don't be afraid to take the 'plunge' ....it can and it did pay off for Jenna.
I loved it....here is someone who threw caution to the wind and went for more joy and experience in LIFE. We should all perhaps take a moment or two to imagine what we would do if the life we were living was contrary to what we wanted to experience before we die. Everyone these days should be thinking more green and definitely more community involved. We all have to be the change we want to see in the world and she is happy with her choice.....I envy her in many ways. Jenna you may not have the riches that some Americans have but you are richer by far in more important ways. I will be giving her a call one of these days to stop by and make a donation and to experience life on 'Cold Antler Farm'. I can't wait for your next book.

Thoughtful, evocative thoughts on owning a small homestead
I love Woginrich's books, and this one is excellent. It focuses on the wheel of the year, and includes essays on both the seasonal responsibilities and their rewards. Very grounded! My husband and I hope to retire to a small holding like this, though we are not up for being as ambitious as Woginrich is! Still, it's very inspirational, and her writing is helping me to maybe find some joy in gardening (I'm more a critter person) than merely the harvest.I also love the way she connects the wheel of the year with social commentary. That context is vital to sustainable lifestyles, however they might be achieved.Highly recommended, especially to people who long for a small-holding of their own- however realistic that might be.

It's full of useless repetition and cliches
I am really cross with myself for buying this book without having done any research first. I was going through a phase of reading "back to the land" books and bought this based on the reviews. The writer is not nearly as enamoured with farm life as she is with herself. I might have forgiven her utter lack of humility and the grating, supercilious way that she takes herself so seriously if this were actually a well-written book, but it's not! It's full of useless repetition and cliches. Worse still, it is utterly disorganised (where was the editor?). Did they just cobble together some blog posts? Very weird and utterly disappointing. For someone trying so desperately hard to live an "authentic" life this book seems strangely inauthentic. Or perhaps she is just young and I, being a bit north of forty, have little tolerance for the smug, self-righteous tone of a twenty-something? Evidently I am in the minority in not liking this book... But if back to the land stories are what you are after... There's are far far better ones out there. Start with, for example: A Handmade Wilderness. Then try Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I could name at least a dozen more that are worth reading. This one is getting donated to our local library straight away!

I learned about Jenna through her Youtube channel, and ...
I learned about Jenna through her Youtube channel, and wanted to learn more about her story. This book is a very relaxing read, and she has a way of writing that really makes it as though you are just having a conversation with her. If you are a city dweller who dreams of starting a small farm one day (like myself) I would highly suggest this book. I haven't read many memoirs, but this is one I will never forget.

Well written blog-like account of homesteading.
A very enjoyable book on a young woman's homesteading adventures and insights. It's built around the seasonal events in a small farm, mostly focused on keeping farm animals and not so much on the vegetable side of farming (she admits she's not an avid gardener). I found the book inspiring and very pleasant to read.

A good read on returning to an agrarian life
An embracing collection of stories, notes, and tales on returning to a sustained, agrarian lifestyle. The descriptions of life and death and feast and famine in a small farm surrounded by a small community will make most people think about the joys and efforts of a simpler life.

My only disappointment was it ended too soon
As someone who is interested in the realities of life on a farm, I was intrigued by the book's description and decided to purchase it. My only disappointment was it ended too soon! I loved Jenna's stories and appreciated her humor. I only wished I didn't live on the other side of the country as I am intrigued now with her workshops.

so if Cold Antler Farm seems like something you would like to read
Cold Antler Farm was the first book that I read of Jenna's and as always with me I read the last one first, but you can do that with Jenna's books, so if Cold Antler Farm seems like something you would like to read, so for it as you don't have to have read her other books to get the picture at all. This is a GREAT book, and as with all of Jenna's material very, very realistic and inspirational. If anyone is out there thinking that the "gentle lady" farmer has a life of O'Rilley they are sadly mistaken, but it sure sounds rewarding and I wish I had of followed my calling to this many, many years ago. Please do yourself a favour and read anything that Jenna writes. It is worth the read that I can promise you...

A great way to be selfreliant and not spend so much at the grocery store.
Even if you live in town you can live like this, but without the animals although you can have chickens in your backyard, if you know someone who owns a block of land you might be able to work out a deal with them.A great book full of ideas that will save you money once you have become set up, yes it will cost you money in the beginning.
