Description: Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or cellulose gum is a cellulose derivative with carboxymethyl groups (-CH2-COOH) bound to some of the hydroxyl groups of theglucopyranose monomers that make up the cellulose backbone. It is often used as its sodium salt, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Uses: CMC is used in food under the E number E466 as a viscosity modifier or thickener, and to stabilize emulsions in various products including ice cream. It is also a constituent of many non-food products, such as personal lubricants, toothpaste, laxatives, diet pills, water-based paints, detergents, textile sizing, and various paperproducts. It is used primarily because it has high viscosity, is nontoxic, and is generally considered to be hypoallergenic as the major source fiber is either softwood pulp or cotton linter. CMC is used extensively in gluten free [4] and reduced fat food products. In laundry detergents, it is used as a soil suspension polymer designed to deposit onto cotton and other cellulosic fabrics, creating a negatively charged barrier to soils in the wash solution. CMC is used as a lubricant in artificial tears. Sometimesmethyl cellulose (MC) is used, but its nonpolar methyl groups (-CH3) do not add any solubility or chemical reactivity to the base cellulose. Following the initial reaction, the resultant mixture produces about 60% CMC plus 40% salts (sodium chloride and sodium glycolate). This product is the so-called technical CMC which is used in detergents. A further purification process is used to remove these salts to produce the pure CMC used for food, pharmaceutical, and dentifrice (toothpaste) applications. An intermediate "semipurified" grade is also produced, typically used in paper applications such as restoration of archival documents.

using this product for paper maché paste
So far so good. I'm an art teacher using this product for paper-mache projects because my usual choice of Elmer's Art Paste keeps going up in price. I loved the Elmers Art Paste right away because it mixed with no lumps, set up quickly, and has an almost luxurious feel. So far, this seems more viscous and "gooey"--a bit like Chinese food thickener but the projects seem well adhered and like the Elmers there is little to no odor or fragrance. This is better than generic Art Pastes I've used. I find it best to set the paste up the day before you need it and mix with a jiffy mixer drill attachment, a blender or food mixer to get the lumps out. I'll try to update this when I have a stronger sense of how it works for this application.

Perfect for fobdant
This worked out excellent. I used it with fondant to help it stiffen and dry faster. Better price than tylose or gumtex powder.

so unhappy with this product, i bought it to ...
so unhappy with this product , i bought it to use in gumpaste for cake decorating purpose because i needed bulk price , it ruined my recipe and it turned my gumpaste into solid rock unlike the CK cmc that I'm used to use , the policy says there's no return and i'm stuck now with 1 LB cmc bag that i can not use .

A bit too grainy
Looking for a bulk container of a product we use in fondant to make it into gum paste. This brand was more granular than we would like, as well as a bit yellowish.

Used with powdered glass
Got this to use as a gel to mix 50/50 with powdered glass for fusing. Recipe I had said 4 Tablespoons to 2 cups of water. This was way too much product. I would up with about a Gallon+ of gel. Would suggest starting at about 1 Tablespoon per
