Little Beauty

Little Beauty by Anthony Browne is a small, charming tale of friendship and understanding, beautifully illustrated. Small children will love it, particularly if you read it to them. Adults will enjoy its whimsy and wonderful illustrations. Cat lovers will be in heaven. Be sure to study every page--there are surprises in the illustrations everywhere! And if you are a fan of the surrealist artist, Rene Magritte, you may see some influence in the illustrations.

Love this book

Unlike a couple of other reviewers who hated the ending, I liked this book a lot. It's clearly based on the life of Koko, the female gorilla who learned to use sign language, but this is fiction, and thus allowed to bend history into a better plot. The ending made me laugh - it seems that the cat has been around humans too much and has learned to lie.

My son requested this book just based on the picture he saw on the back of another one of Anthony Browne's books. He loves gorillas and so he loves this book. The pictures are fun for him to look at and even though he doesn't totally understand the story (some of it is above his age level), he has me read it over and over again. I personally enjoy the pictures more than the story.

This is my 6 year old daughter's favorite book. She reads it every single day. Adorable story, easy to follow along. This book is a classic.

This little beauty (did you see what I did there?) will be woven into our nonfiction unit after I read aloud Koko's Kitten. The illustrations alone make it a winner. Little Beauty will likely jump start discussions not only about nonfiction text (real facts vs. what the author artistically embedded), but also some of the "softer" skills like theme <we call this the author's so-what in our class> and how readers "read" text images.

My daughter loves this book. After borrowing it from the library half a dozen times at her insistence, I figured we should buy a copy. She is 3 and is only beginning to read, but she has it just about memorized anyway. Great illustrations and a fun story

it's a cute story and the visuals are nice. Anthony Brown is a good children books author. we definitely recommend.

もともと原書で知っている絵本でしたが、どうしても好きで買いました。　タイトルのLittle Beautyは、子猫の名前。それだけでたくさんのことを表現している優雅な響きの名前だと思うのですが、邦題ではなぜか「ゴリオとヒメちゃん」なのですね。（一体どうしてそんな名前に・・・。原書にはゴリオもヒメもどこにも出て来ないです）　最初の２匹の出会い、巨大なゴリラと小さい小さい子猫の絵だけで、ハートにドキュンですよ。こんな体格差に、思わずも萌えてしまいました。「食べちゃダメだよ」という飼育員さんの心配もよくわかります。子猫に愛情を注ぐゴリラ、仲良く暮らす２匹の友達、でもある日、２匹に危機が・・・・。このまま離ればなれになってしまうのか？？？　文章はとても短く、文章すらないページもあるのに、ゴリラの表情だけでも溢れるほどの情景が描かれています。そしてどんどん引き込んでいく力強い文章に、おはなしを聞いている子供ももう泣きそう（笑）　可愛がられる側も、いつまでも庇護される側でばかりはいない、ということを気づかされハッとさせられます。　この関係は、愛情を注ぎ続ける親と子の関係にも言えることなのかな。　一見、愛情の向きが一方的に見える２匹の、実は両方向の深い信頼関係が描かれていて、いろいろ考えさせられる本です。　P.S　子供（６歳）はまだキングコングを知らなかったので、ちょっと説明に手間取りました。キングコングの予備知識があれば、ゴリラのいきなりの行動がもっと理解できると思います。

Excellent book for preschoolers, my grandson was introduced to this book at story time at the library and kept talking about the gorilla book. He was 2 at the time . I checked it out so he could read it at home, which he did every night for a month when it had to be returned, so I purchased it for him. He really enjoys this book. Illustrations are beautiful. The story itself is about two very unlikely friends. I would recommend for 2-4 year olds.

Dieses Buch ist für Jung und für Alt. Kinder haben ihre wahre Freude an den Bildern und der Geschichte. Erwachsene können sogar noch tiefere Ebenen und Bedeutungen des Buches entdecken, als es Kindern möglich ist.
