Computer Systems: An Integrated Approach to Architecture and Operating Systems

Perfect book for the undecided sophomore
The book gives you enough introductory information for you to decide which path to take: are you are a digital hardware enthusiast who has always wondered how an operating system interfaces and commands all the things you can actually see and feel on your board, or will you be an OS hacker who wants to slice and dice, break and/or remake you Linux box, or are you going to be an internetwork specialist who likes to take control of information flow on the intra/Internet. If you use this book effectively (on your own, or part of a course at your college), you'll be building and understanding your own computer system, and also have a good deal of knowledge about computer and other device networks, by the end of it. In short, an excellent material full of fundamental information to have as a computer engineer/scientist.

Well written!!!!
It's sadly rare that a technical text book is written well, however in the case of this publication, my neice, who studies computer science at university, actually hugged this book stating her love for how well the author articulates concepts in a clear, concise way, not leaving out blocks of information as some many others do. For that, I give them a bow and a big five stars.

Decent but definitely skimps on detail in some areas
The book is pretty good for someone who wants a broad overview of computer architecture and OS topics. It is readable and conveys a basic amount of information about each subject. But if you are the type of reader who stops to think about what really must be going on in detail, you'll recognize pretty frequently that the authors do a lot of hand-waving. I understand that they must do this in order to cover all of the topics, but I wish they would be more explicit about when they are doing it.

Easy Read
I enjoyed learning from this book because the writing is very clear making the content easy to understand. Moreover, the authors use daily activities as ways to think about computing concepts, which I really liked. In short, if you want an introduction to computer systems, this is the book for you.

Technical but obscure.
Very dry and the organization had me spinning in circles for which way the author was going. It is obvious that the author knows the material but I could not follow well enough to make this book work for me. Might be the style that it was written in. I have read many white papers that did not confuse me as much but then I know I am reading a heavy technical paper. With this book I never truly thought of it as a white paper but maybe I should have??

Very Good Textbook
The textbook is written by the professor of the class. The textbook has very detailed material and pretty straightforward to understand. The chapters are long, which is expected. Very good textbook. Whatever you need to know for the course is in this textbook.
