subtle, subdued beauty
well-worn, subdued, simple. the interiors are more of an homage to the so-called simplicity of norwegian design. can it be achieved? good question with the absense of northern lights. tberes something about the homes that makes them elegant, warm yet quiet.

This is a beautiful book. It's full of really interesting interiors captured so well in the photographs. The mix of art and ceramics is very unique and appealing to me. I loved Hilary Robertson's "The Stuff of Life" too, and this one is even better! It's nice to know that an author keeps going so strong. It's hard to find really good interior design books, and this is certainly one of them. I look forward to more from this author…perhaps that is a bit greedy!

Where Was the White in the "Black and White Interiors?!"
I love black and white monochromatic interiors, as well as the many permutations and shades that these neutral colors are available in . I love a mix of very modern furnishings with antiques. I love honed concrete floors. In the newly-released book, " Monochrome Home: Elegant Interiors in Black and White" however, while the photos, and paper on which they were printed, were of high quality, the interiors published were almost exclusively designed in dark, dark shades of what the author calls "dark neutrals"-- "Navy, charcoal, forest green, deepest aubergine, stormy grey, inky black, slate coal, ebony, midnight, indigo, liquorish black, blackened khaki, bitter chocolate," etc, etc. Just by the name of the colors, you can get a clear image of what these interiors will look like. In the quite good accompanying text, the author described the interiors as "shadowy," "brooding," "soothing," "cozy," "mysterious," "louche," "glamorous," "serious," "somber," "calming," "sensual," "rich," "sophisticated," "monastic," "sexy," "intimate," rooms that "envelop and embrace" their inhabitants. To me, the rooms felt like living in an underground cave, or a basement. Any of the above-described colors can look beautiful when used along with a much lighter neutral. But to layer multiple "dark neutrals," with almost no, what the author calls "light neutrals," other than a few accessories, in my humble opinion makes for a depressing, extremely bleak, dreary environment to spend time in. The text referred to "taking advantage of natural light", but natural light was extremely sparse. There were a token inclusion of interiors that included, among the primarily dark-end-of-the-neutral -spectrum interiors, very interesting mid-century chairs in shades of "light-colored neutrals," which added a great deal of interest to the otherwise drab, slouchy settings. The locations included homes in Milan, London, Paris, the South of France, 2 from NYC, and several from Copenhagen--either in the center city, or in Swedish seaside cottages. Monochromatic can be gorgeous. Black & white can be gorgeous. But where are the white and shades of "light neutral" within these featured "black and white" decors of the book title? Perhaps the design style was simply not my taste. There was no inspiration provided of ideas that I could translate to my own home.

Corners bent and scratched
Normally I don’t write reviews but I was hesitant to purchase this due to the last hardcover book I bought from Amazon had no stuffing of some sort and was bent in the corners. Well same thing happened again but instead they also package a metal case inside with it which probably scratched the book from sliding around and the corners are bent. They could at least put bubble wrap or wrapping paper so the book doesn’t slide around. Overall the book itself and pictures are gorgeous!
