The details
As someone that's been a star trek fan for over 25 years and has been reading star trek books for about 20 years, when I read a book I notice when something is off. This is a 3 book series and I think the story line is awesome but I was very disappointed that the author didn't quite get the characteristics and nuances of the characters right. The characters said certain things or behaved in a certain way that wasn't consistent with what we know. Also, some of the trek terminology was off. For example, and I don't remember which book in this series, there was a distance measured in miles when on the planets surface. We know that star trek uses metrics to describe distance and to say miles was off. Also the conference room was referred to as the 'meeting room'.The mixup in terminology is something that happens from time to time and is forgivable but I think it was most important to get the characters right and it just wasn't there.5 stars for storyline but overall 2 stars for the misses

More tie-ins with the Alpha Quadrant
In the series episode "Eye of the Needle," the Voyager crew makes contact with a Romulan scientist in the Alpha Quadrant (although he's 20 years in the past). But after the way that episode ended, I never expected the tale to resurface. I was pleased to see Christie Golden's clever approach of building on that plot line. The book includes a lot of Captain Janeway's internal monologue and thoughts, which I enjoyed because she's one of my favorite characters in all fiction. Not all Star Trek authors can do her character justice. I've ordered the next book in the series so I can see how the story evolves.

Great story
Great adventure in Voyager's history. Black matter is an unusual subject & brings up many issues not addressed in other books.

A tad predictable.
The premise is interesting but the plotline was predictable and the character development stilted. Hopefully, the following novels will be a bit more lively.

I ordered the second and am hoping this is better, but so far
This book was not up to usual standards. I ordered the second and am hoping this is better, but so far...no such luck.

Great 3 part Voyager storyline
Nice read. Love the way this author manages to to keep all the characters exactly like in the series. This book is part 1 of 3 and together they make a great story.

Not horrible, but not good.
This story was well-enough written, if not truly compelling. The characterizations seemed a bit off, in that the dark matter poisoning that the crew was experiencing was supposed to be having serious deleterious effects on their personalities, but that only seemed to be enforced sporadically. Yes, every once in a while we would see clear indications of the effects, but at least as frequently there was no sign of difficulties. Janeway has a headache that makes her very irritable, and sometimes she is described as having to fight to overcome that and behave rationally. But frequently, she seems almost unaffected. Chakotay's temper is likewise supposed to be frayed, but other than showing more irritation than usual at Tom Paris's borderline insubordination, he seems almost completely unaffected. The same is true for almost all of the characters. Further, the main solution to the conflict in the plot seems to be to search for (and more or less successfully find) a deus ex machina. All in all, the book wouldn't have been a first-tier book even if it had been a stand-alone; as "Book 1 of 3", it leaves much to be desired. The thought that I have to wade through two more like this in order to reach a conclusion is annoying.

The beginning of a very promising trilogy...
I really enjoyed this book. In many ways it was just my kind of story since I found the whole idea with the dark matter very interesting. Not to mention that Christie Golden brought back Telek R'Mor from one of my favorite episodes, "Eye of the Needle", from season one of Voyager. And with him, of course, more Romulans and the prospect of trying to protect the timeline. For me this trilogy feels very promising and I'm looking forward to see where Golden takes it.

Brilliant Star Trek Books
I bought this book to complete a set of three, having read thefirst. Like all Star Trek books (and I have dozens, both paperbackand e-books), brilliant and absorbing - you won't want to put it down.
