As Nature Intended....
So much has been said about this album that it would be superfluous to add anything other than comments regarding the mono release... so I'll simply say the mono version of this album is far more compelling than stereo. That said, I did however notice that Reed's vocals are somewhat buried in the mix on Waiting for the Man and Run, Run, Run. Not sure if that was the original intent when it came to mixing the album, but the stereo versions of those particular songs are slightly stronger on the stereo mix. I hate it when people bury vocals, assuming they are nothing more than an equal part of the recording. I mean, hey, there's a reason vocalists stand in front of their bands, and any recording should bear that out, as well.

Vinyl was not yellow as promised
While everything else was fine, the album did not come in the yellow vinyl as the description said. I paid a few extra bucks for it that I could have saved if I bought just the regular vinyl, which is what I received.

"Going for the kingdom in mono"
The VU & Nico reissue in mono is a very cool listen. This also contains some rare single edits of "Sunday Morning" & "All Tomorrows Parties". This mix seems have a beefer bass & very cool sounding echo on the vocals. The mono comes across as more raw & in your face v the stereo counterpart due to the sparce instrumentation used by the VU. I have the LP in stereo & that is ok too. This version seems to rock & really compliments the VU like many of your favorite garage singles do. I have been on a bit of a mono kick lately & so far have not been disapointed. Only 4 stars as this version would be for mono freaks or "completists" only but this is a 5 star release all the way. This is also available on vinyl as well.

A re-release of the 2nd Disc of the "Deluxe Edition"
Velvet Underground fans pay attention--The Rarities Edition of The Velvet Underground & Nico merely contains the second disc from the 2002 double-disc Deluxe Edition of the 1st album, the mono mix -- along with mono single versions of "All Tomorrow's Parties," "Sunday Morning," and "Femme Fatale," plus an alternate take of "I'll Be Your Mirror". This CD contains NO previously unreleased material. If you are a die-hard VU fan, as I am, you probably already have this material, either from The Deluxe Edition, or from the Australian Bootleg Box Set that came out about 15 years ago, so check your CD stacks before ordering. The material in this disc is Five Stars, but re-labling previously released material is a shoddy practice, and Polydor is also currently re-releasing similar product for a dozen other artists under the title "Rarities Edition." Caveat emptor!

Yes, it has been released before, BUT...
The Velvet Underground & Nico is one of the greatest albums of all time, and the mono mix is the definitive version. This CD was originally released as disc 2 of the "Deluxe Edition" of the album in 2002. However, many fans, including me, did not pick it up as we already had the stereo mix on disc 1 and did not feel the $25 price tag was worth it just for the second disc. This release fixes that complaint, as now it is available separately for half the price. IMO, this CD completely replaces any other issue of the album for sound quality alone, and plus you get the four single versions of songs from the album, making it pretty much complete. If you want demos and outtakes, look at the Peel Slowly and See box set, but if you just want the best version of the Velvet's masterpiece there is, look no further than this release.

Literally a Work of Art! Deliberately sounds bad to sound good!
This album almost defies logic; it's not meant to be pleasant sounding and so any attempt to clean up this album seems almost sacrilegious and yet this album has inspired great musicians such as David Bowie (heck the whole punk rock genre) and even David Sylvian's Japan has done a very interesting rendition of "All Tomorrow's Parties" the original version here being my favorite track.Sadly and true to form, Amazon has gotten their product descriptions wrong again as this version of the classic album in definitely not remastered as is advertised! The sound quality is just as good/bad (depending upon your point of view) as the normal, much, much cheaper version that's currently out there. And so is this version worth more than $41 bucks?Granted the mini-lp sleeve is a nice work of art in itself but frankly, unless you don't already have this album, it's really hard to justify the incredibly expensive price as it's not like the sound quality is vastly improved or anything like that. Hence the 2 stars, which is not a reflection of the creative content of this album which is simply a modern art masterpiece but is for the great lack of value for money this version of the album represents unless you'd pay more than 4 times the price for basically what amounts to well-designed cardboard. If you had to translate avant-garde to music however, this album is what it would sound like. The late great artist Andy Warhol did the album cover and apparently produced the album as well. Like all sonic works of art, the only way to listen to this properly is to just experience the album allowing every note to slowly sink in with your eyes closed. From the almost innocent nursery-rhymish opener, "Sunday Morning" to the cacophony of the last track, "European Son", with gems like "Heroin" and "All Tomorrow's Parties" in between add the Dylan-esque spoofs of "There She Goes Again" and "I'm Waiting for the Man" and you have with the album design both a visual and sonic work of art.The content of this album is a very important contribution to rock music history and definitely a lasting classic.
