Pompeii: The History, Life and Art of the Buried City

Finally found this book. Pompeii. Can't wait to devour all the information.Also the book came super fast and I will diffently be checking out the other books sold under Galvan Roots Emporium. Seems to have some good varieties.

This is a fascinating book, printed on heavy, high-quality paper. It's amazing to see some of the artwork from nearly 2,000 years ago, particularly paintings and mosaics, and the research is excellent.Where the book suffers is the layout of many of the detailed images, some of which are printed at postage-stamp size which can't easily be examined unless you use a magnifying glass (which I have, fortunately). Also, the text was translated from Italian and some of the translated passages don't read that well.

Large photos great descriptions easy to read.

What a great presentation of Pompeii. Fabulous photos. Bought two. One for my daughter who lives in Napoli and one for us. Just returned from Italy. This book may actually be better that the real thing. Well. Almost.

I love this book. It has so many pictures and such good explanations too. I have many books on Pompeii and this is the best one of all of them.

I had the great fortune to see "A Day in Pompeii" at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. This exhibit was only brought to 3 museums in the entire United States before departing to Europe. Since that exhibit, my kids and I have been on the hunt for a great book on Pompeii. We have checked out several and I've bought a few until finally seeing this one. Not only are the photographs, quality of the book, and objects they are portraying top notch, but the writing is excellent. Beyond excellent. The final pages written about the volcano itself are part geology lesson about volcanoes, part what it would be like if you were in Pompeii on that day and you had not already escaped before the lapilli started to fall from the sky. I rarely give books reviews, but if this topic interests you at all, THIS IS THE BOOK TO OWN.

I've found nothing to dislike about this book . It is large and well illustrated with plenty of text describing history and life in Pompeii .

It is a beautifully illustrated and carefully edited book. It is a "only" four stars rating as I really appreciate maps as a good tool to learn History and the book simply has no maps or graphics to help the comprehension of Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Stabia environment area. But the book really worths every penny you pay for it as the pictures are amazing and certainly constitute an excellent source of information for those who are intending to visit Pompeii site as well as for the ones who have already been there and are interested in better comprehend in a more detailed manner the place which symbolizes the starting point of modern archeology studies.

This book is of excellent value and quality, very rich in text and images, and absolutely beautiful, complete with fold out art. But...it's HUGE. Way to big to fit vertically on any bookshelf. Worth buying it anyway? - heck yes.

Excellent illustrations and informative text. Not a book to take with you; far too heavy, but once you have visited Pompeii a book to refer to and relive your experience of this unusual and interesting Roman city.

Just returned from Greece and Turkey, weeks later I was still pumped with touristic ferver left over from said sojourn. To help abate this desire for ancient history, I began to delve into another passion, Pompeii and its sister city Herculaneum. While I have ordered several books in an attempt to cover most aspects of these wonders, this large volume was the first to arrive.POMPEII: The History, Life, and Art of the Buried City.......FABULOUS!!!!! Not only is this a large coffee-table type book, but it covers most aspects of the city lost beneath the ashes, not the least its art. There are exquisite full and double page photos of the detailed murals, bronzes, frescos, aerial photos of the site, historic photos and lithographs etc. While nothing is covered in depth, there is more than enough on each subject to whet one's appetite.It is impossible to imagine, without actually viewing, the artistry, the sublty and even the grotesqueness of some of the offerings. We live in such a different world, and yet looking at the faces, the poses, the love of nature, celebrations, and the joys of living for all classes, we cannot help but recognise the mirror view of ourselvesThese people were as we are even now in all our glory, or lack of it. I look at the masterful mosaic of a cat pouncing upon a bird and look at her virtual twin now purring at my feet...the wide, yellow eyes, the tiger-striped amber coat and black tipped tail. The details in all the works of art are astounding. Masterpieces such as are found in the villas and temples defy time, religion, race, or any other dividing force of humanity.This book is one to cherish, to mull over for long hours, or short, sweetly stolen moments. Its pages will delight, surprise, awe and astound you. One thing Pompeii leaves as its legacy to the generations that have followed is to savour living every single moment we have...to admire, acknowledge and accept life in all its forms.If you can imagine a world without limits....this was it! Buy the book and relish every delicious page as I do. Some of the best money you may ever spend : )
