Great American Build
First off.... MADE IN USA! it is not so often that you see that on products nowadays's but when you do your sure as heck your getting a quality product. Now for the knife itself. My knife came in a clam shell package, other than the made in USA print nothing to be excited about. The knife itself came sharp out of the box, but just like i do with all my knives i give it a quick run on my leather strop. After a few minutes the knife is shaving sharp. The Blade: The knife steel is 420HC stainless steel ( 420 stainless steel category with high carbon content ) with a 3/16" thick stock, i normally do not get knives with 420SS steel due to it being inferior compared to other knife steels, but gerbers heat treatment obviously makes the steel desirable with a good balance of corrosion resistance and edge retention. The blade is full tang all the way to the tip in which acts as a glass breaker or nuggin buster. I have carried this knife a lot and have used it for cutting branches and wires, opening cans and chopping wood. Till this day i have yet to sharpen it since the first time i did the day i got it and it still passes my paper test. With heavy use, the blades black finish gets scratched up and worn out, but that's to be expected of a rugged tactical/utility knife. The Handle: Made out of over molded plastic with a rubber top layer. It is contoured well enough to fit most hands and provides enough grip to prevent slippage. My only gripe with the handle or pommel area is the glass breaker, it tends to scratch and poke my arms when i carry it suspended on my belt. But filing of the sharp rough edges on the glass breaker tip of the pommel remedied the problem. I have also made a nylon strap for it replacing the molle compatible strap it came with making it have a slimmer profile than the original and makes it less intimidating when carried as an EDC. To make the strap i just cut a 6 inch long 3 inch wide nylon strap from an old laptop bag strap and folded it into a U shape and drilled two holes through the nylon strap and mounted it to the hard case sheath via the two original screws with the original lock nuts. The Sheath: The sheath is made out of a durable hard plastic with a rubber over mold and can be mounted for a variety of carry options. This sheath has been through a lot of abuse, from being used as a hammer to being an alternative to a pot holder. I find myself using things for purposes they were not designed for many times, but it is what i had in hand and within my reach and when time is of an essence then if it works then it works. And this one just happened to be one of those things that i had on me when i needed some thing done. Overall impression: Great overall quality and construction, Good price point, Sharp blade that holds and edge and a nice quality sheath. I have chosen this knife over the gerber LMF2 due to the fact that the tang is really FULL tang, unlike the LMF2 that i had a pommel fly on me. This prodigy is almost the same thing as the LMF2 only with some slight differences at a fraction of the price and of course a real full tang.

great knife
let me start off by saying i'm usually not a big fan of serrations. i own only 2 knives with them out of a collection of about 40. this knife has changed my view on serrations. Gerber got it right. these can actually cut and carve much like a smooth edge.when i got this knife in the mail today, i opened it up and my first impression was that it and the sheath looked solid. upon taking it out of the box, i noticed the thickness of the blade, and that it was a full tang. i have no complaints about the sheath. the housing section of the sheath looks like its held to the backing with velcro straps, but thats not the case. its held with two bolts at the top and a piece of nylon at the bottom. i think the velcro is just for attaching things like pouches for storage.the knife is comfortable and weighted well. despite the fact that its a smaller knife, i think its perfectly sized for almost any task. the spine on the top of the knife is sharp and strikes a firsteel extremely well. after making some adjustments to it i took it outside and did some testing. i started off by batoning some wood. the knife performed well and i did not feel the need to hesitate to strike it as hard as i could in order to drive it through the wood. next, i tried out the glass breaker on an old fishtank. it punched right through it better than some of the other glass breakers i have used on pocket knives. getting back on topic, i shaved off some shavings from the wood i had split and used my firesteel and the spine of the knife to start them easily. the back edge of this knife throws massive sparks with a basic firesteel. because i notice the knife was balanced correctly, i decide to try throwing it. it throws better than you would expect. i like this knife and after some decent use, all i can see wrong is i rubbed off some of the paint. i highly recommend for the price.

Simply Amazing
This is one of my favorite knives ever made in my opinion. Not only cause of the bargain price, simply cause its a fantastic knife. Pros: - The 420 HC steel is soft and can retain a working edge in no time. The serrated edge on this knife is my favorite out of any and Im personally not a huge fan of serrations, but it can cut through just about anything and never lose its sharpness. The tip of the knife which im picky about does not fracture easy and will last forever if you do not abuse it. - The handle feels amazing in your hand and can fit in any hand generally speaking. It does not get slippery what so ever when wet - The sheathe is wonderful and wish all my knives had a sheathe of this caliber (even though not made in the US). It has 2 securement straps on it which are not necessary cause the blade locks in the sheathe wonderfully. Also it has so many different straps on the back to secure it to your body or belt in any way possible. - The full tang blade tip (at the end) that works as a lanyard placement, also works GREAT to bust through glass or anything of that nature. - The weight is absolutely perfect and balanced for a knife of its size, probably one of the best weight ratios ive ever felt in a knife. - This knife can take just about any kind of abuse you can throw at it. Cons: - The 420 HC can lose its edge rather quickly, compared to harder steels out there, but then again its so easy to re sharpen it makes up for it. - The black paint on the blade will wear off over time, if you actually use this blade daily, yet this is purely a cosmetic complaint and does not impact the performance what so ever. Overall : Gerber has made an amazing knife at an amazing price. This is probably one of my favorite knives ever bar none. Its got everything you look for in a knife and then some. You WILL NOT find a better deal at a better price. I would recommend this knife for any person looking for a great fixed blade and thats comparing to ANY maker of knives - yes its that good.

Great, well made, quality fixed blade, razor sharp. Very high quality for Gerber
Great hunting knife, very high quality, balanced and heavy duty. Extremely hard metal, edge has held up very well. Also, sheath locks in securely, and love the optional leg strap. Would recommend to anyone looking for a new hunting knife. Razor sharp and nice comfortable handle.

Minor Disappointment but Still a Good Knife for the Price
I've owned innumerable Gerber blades and tools over the years; I have had the greatest appreciation for the quality and reliability of the Gerber product line. And this knife, for the most part, would be excellent for use as a camping / backpacking knife. But the use of the word 'combat' in the description is a bit misleading. The blade is sturdy, the spine is thick and the serrated portion extends almost half the blade length. Now, MY knife was actually not very sharp out of the box, which was unusual for Gerber. It took about five minutes with a hone to get a decent edge. The thickness of the blade combined with the modest width, creates a blade geometry that is not terribly conducive to 'razor sharpness', but this is acceptable for a camping knife. Overall construction is good, the sheath is well made and has a strong, positive grip on the knife. The knife is also a medium weight, hefty enough for chores that don't quite require a machete or hatchet. But... the alternate designation of this as a 'combat' knife is not at all accurate. As a tool for use in combat theaters or as a last-ditch defensive weapon, the overall weight, blade configuration and size, would be absolutely last resort, and for E & E, SERE or even search and rescue operations, it would be marginally adequate. I would prefer either the style and feel of the legend - KaBar - or, for slightly less military use, the hefty, razor sharp and almost indestructible SRK by Cold Steel. Both of these blades would be in the same general price area and would be much more well suited to combat-type applications. Still - the little Gerber is well made, reasonably priced and suited for almost any camping or backpacking requirements.

High quality at a value price.
The five star rating is a combination if steel quality (not the best but very good), knife/sheath features, price (I paid $38 on Amazon) and being american made. I have three of these, one in my edc bag, my wife's car and my son's bug out bag. This knife fits all three of us very well with hand sizes from small to XL. The grippy overlay on the full tang handle provides an excellent grip for a nonslip experience with or without gloves. The pommel tapers to a sharp point to create a glass breaker, and has a lanyard hole making this knife an excellent urban survival or utility knife. The sheath provides excellent retention with its three points of contact and with plenty of slots and holes to allow for strapping items to the sheath as well as the molle straps and loops on the back that allow the knife to be carried I'm multiple angles in both right and left hand. I have strapped a firesteel, paracord lanyard, Gerber sharpening rod, and micro flashlight to mine to make it more of a survival package. The partially serrated blade provides excellent cutting power for hard to cut items like wet rope, tires, or nylon strapping. Though not the best bushcraft knife in the world, due to the serrations, it will handle typical camp, hiking, and survival task without issue. I have done feather sticks, notches in wood, chopping , and batoning with this knife with no damage to the serrations. This knife is light weight and very versatile, low in cost and american made making it a must have in every knife collection.

Must have knife for any camper/hunter/backcountry/survivalist!
This knife is amazing. It is a full tang knife that feels solid but not too heavy. The 3/16" thick blade is the perfect width to withstand heavy duty tasks like batoning and chopping, but still thin enough to handle smaller detail-oriented tasks like notching and carving. It has an incredibly balanced feel. Whether your hands are wet, dry, gloved or bloody, you will not lose your grip. The window breaker in the pommel could do some serious damage. The sheath is also great. A rubberized plastic sheath attached to ballistic nylon. It holds the knife very securely. It has the potential to be a perfect sheath with a few mods. I removed the screws holding the rubberized part to the nylon part. Now only the velcro straps hold the two together. I have a sharpening stone stored back there (similar to the Bear Grylls ultimate knife sheath) I also attached a utility pouch to store a small survival kit. This knife could compete with knives that are far more expensive. Great buy for an incredibly great price. The knife and sheath are MIRS compliant which means they are made to standards that the military approves for purchase and use.
