Automatic diaphragm, auto-focusing, or any other functions will not operate when the lens is reversed. It is advisable to use a lens with a manual aperture ring so there is enough light entering the lens when shooting close up, so using your kit lens would need alot of light due to the aperture ring closing to the smallest aperture when reversed. some fixed primes work really well for this set up.
