Not all of us are "readers", much less "theologians" or "clergy". That's okay though, because a few good people (very few, to be exact) have simplified the many complex issues in the Holy Scriptures by re-telling them in a comforting and bedside manner! No, I'm not talking about those law-breaking "scriptural vandals" who steal the truth of the Holy Scriptures and use a "cut and paste" method of taking Scripture OUT OF CONTEXT to say something entirely FALSE or OPPOSITE from what the writer of the various book(s) meant.What I'm talking about, are those few (very few, to be exact) gifted individuals who have taken biblical truths and have conveyed these same truths in an understandable way, without force, without threat, without hypocrisy, without pretense, without pride, for the sake of WINNING YOU over to the SIDE OF TRUTH as the Holy Scriptures teach.As someone has wisely stated, the B-I-B-L-E (Bible) stands for:B - asicI - nstructionsB - eforeL - eavingE - arthDid you get that? Like a quiet meadow with still waters running beside, this book BESIDE STILL WATERS, by Charles Spurgeon, will bring you PEACE of mind, JOY in your heart, and HOPE in your spirit.A few dollars for the book itself, but UNTOLD WEALTH for your mind, soul, spirit!!

In 2010 while I was going through cancer treatments, a good friend stopped by the house to drop off this book. Now its 2017 and I still read a page or two each day to encourage me as I move on with me life. This book was so good for me that between 2010 and 2017 my wife and I have given over 50 copies away to friends who have cancer, health problems, lost a loved one or any number of struggles in life. This book does what it says, it provides peace and comfort in difficult times. Spurgeon could preach so well because he himself struggled with depression. He watched as many in his church and town died from a disease that grabbed so many people. Look towards the back of the book (page 369) at the Topical Index. Anxiety, Death, Depression, Loneliness, Trials, Suffering and many more things are covered by Mr Spurgeon as he shares the greatness of our God. If you are thinking of buying this book, do someone a favor and buy two copies. I know a family member, a fried or someone from your church will soon need a copy and you can step up and help them too! I have 5 copies at my desk as I write this and I know a few will soon be gone. . . . from my shelves every morning to greet me with the wisdom and comfort of God's daily Word, it would be Beside Still Waters by Spurgeon, edited by Roy Clark. But I can't. Because it is already down from my shelves and with my Bible, waiting with a devotional that brings healing if you feel wounded, courage if you face enemies, hope if you're in the valley, and comfort for your soul. I'd give this book a 6th star if it were possible. I am a retired Christian book editor with forty years of editing/reading behind me who hadn't begun to read Spurgeon until 2 months ago. Thank you God for the gift.

This devotion is so healing in hard times I was given after my hubby’s death 12 years ago each devotion was life saving other problems so overwhelming came j could read every one over and over !I’ve written all over the pages no money what to do God answered each time I look back over and over again I’ve written so many issues problems prayers on the pages and can look back now and see Gus grace love answers encouraged by them allI’m needed another new one for new trials upon me as trials come always in our life but he gives his word and shied the wayWe all have troubles thus book is deep rich and lure gold ordering number two !

This book, containing a selection of page-long passages from the writings and sermons of Charles Spurgeon, has been a great comfort to me during a prolonged season of trial. I read one or two pages before I go to sleep at night to help focus my mind on the truth of God's sovereignty, mercy, and love. Not every entry will fit your particular trial, but many will. There is much encouragement here to seek the God of Scripture, whose mercies are new every morning and who holds His blood-bought children tenderly in His bosom. There is also much here to help you focus your prayers for yourself and for others. I highly recommend this book (to be read as a supplement to Scripture) to anyone who wants daily encouragement to walk by faith and not by sight during seasons of difficulty. If you want to glorify Christ in your trials, there is something here for you!

The words of Charles Spurgeon in this book are far richer than I expected. Far more beautiful than I expected! Each page has a title and little excerpt of wisdom. Some page titles include, "Laid on a shelf for a period of time" for those who are discouraged that God would ever use you. "I will not forget you," for those who feel God has overlooked you. And various messages of comfort through every trial I can think of. I bought this because the Lord often sends me opportunities to minister comfort to hurting friends, and it has richly blessed me in a way I did not expect. Spurgeons words are timeless and so applicable for modern day. Don't hesitate. Get this book.

'Beside Still Waters' is a scripturally referenced and vividly described series of one page vignettes to comfort the soul. Spurgeon's God given compassion and wisdom breathe from every page, yet the reader is not left to drown in the valley.Each vignette offers not only consolation but also encouragement and hope. 'If you are put on the shelf,' he writes, 'do not rust; pray that the Master will polish you, so that when He uses you again, you will be fully ready for the work.' (p 9).When troubles come thick and fast and it seems as if 'the waves roll against you...', we are reminded that '...all things work together for good to those who love God...' (Romans 8:28,29) and this is infinitely better than 'all things should be as I would wish to have them.' (p 243)This is a treasure store filled with wisdom and blessings gleaned from a life poured out in service to the Lord. It can be approached in a variety of ways - from randomly dipping into sections, studying thematically, reading daily, to simply reading systematically from start to finish.After purchasing this book, I was impelled to give it to a friend who was experiencing a number of difficulties. Now, several copies later, there are still people coming to mind, to whom this book would minister.A real blessing, a joy to read... and a joy to share with others.

I didn't realise that this fantastic collection of texts had been updated in today's language, so it's a lot easier to read than Charles Spurgeon's usual language style. I also keep on thinking of friends I could pass this on to. Truly comforting, reassuring words. What a blessing this preacher has been to the world.

A book of daily readings by Spurgeon translated into modern English which I would thoroughly recommend

This book uses beautifull old english and Spurgeon's encouragements and compassion is heartfelt. Sometimes a bit too serious and gloomy but would recommend it to mature Believers.
