Women Illustrators of the Golden Age (Dover Fine Art, History of Art)

Wonderful Illustrations
I have been interested in the art of children's book illustrations for a while. Particularly that of the lush older style illustrations. This book gives a wonderful sample of these women's art.

Lovely to see light shed on Female Golden Age Illustrators
An absolutely beautiful book I highly recommend, as I was introduced to several new female illustrators I never knew about, other than Beatrix Potter. Lovely compilation of different works of theirs from more well-known ones to ones you may have never seen before (at least for me). The book looks exactly as it does on the photo and is paperback. Each art has the title of the piece, who the artist is (they all get their own section but there is still credit for each piece repeated, which I like), what the work may be based on (usually a story) and the date of its erection. I really appreciate Dover compiling these archival guides and works, as they are fantastic reference guides for current artists now. :) You may also get a chance to learn or discover new pieces you never did before, like me.

The printing crispness is not good, especially for a book of illustrations.
This has beautiful and delightful illustrations of renowned women illustrators, from the Golden Age. However the pictures are not crisp and the paper quality is low.. If you are only using this as a study book or for reference, I’m sure it’s adequate. I was hoping to rekindle the joy of these illustrations, so the book was disappointing.

A WONDERFUL book.
Pictures are great. Good size to be able to see detail. A marvelous review of golden age illustration. I spent hours with it on the day I received it. Includes a short biography of each artist. I love it.Photos inside are much higher quality than the cover, so don’t judge the book by the cover!

Remembering the ladies
A surprising number of female artists, most of them concentrating on children's and young people's books, worked successfully during the Golden Age of Illustration, when "Every well-bred girl was schooled in the arts of drawing and sketching, and by working at home, a woman's modesty could remain uncompromised." Here are examples of the paintings and drawings, in both color and BW, of 22 of them, ranging from Kate Greenaway to Virginia Frances Sterrett and portraying scenes from everything from Christina Rossetti's poetry to Nora Archibald Smith's Boys & Girls Of Bookland . Quaint costumes, attractive children, charming animals, fairies, and royalty appear in these pages, all reproduced with stunning clarity, and there's an index of contributors that lists the titles, publishers, and dates of the books illustrated, so that interested viewers can seek them out and see still more of the work of these often underappreciated artists.

Well worth the price!
Although I collect illustrated children's books, many of these female artists I had not heard of. This book contains the standard ones by Jesse Wilcox Smith, Beatrix Potter, and Kate Greenaway, but here are the names of the other ones: Florence Harrison (awesome preRaphaelite pictures!), Helen Stratton, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Jessie Marion King, Elenore Plaisted Abbott, Mabel Attwell, Ida Outhwaite, Ruth Mary Hallock, Henriette Willebeek Le Mair, Margaret Tarrant, Margaret Evans Price, Anne Anderson, Clara Burd, Blanche Fisher Wright, Dorothy Lathrop, Lois Lenski, Virginia Sterrett, Eulalie Bachman, and Fern Bisel Peat. You won't be sorry for buying this introduction to many unusual female illustrators. Like all Dover Books' pictures, beware that the pix may vary from the originals by being somewhat bluish, greenish or brownish. But the pix here look great!

Not about Violet Oakley at all
I bought this book because it came up when I searched Violet Oakley. It has nothing to do with her - at all. However, it is a lovely book of the work of other female artists.

Best book yet on women artists of the Golden Age. Stunningly beautiful!
This book is a must have for anybody who loves the art of this period. Beautifully illustrated with interesting bios on the artists too. I've spent hours viewing, reading the wonderful women artists and plan to research more art by these great artists!

Love it.
I bought this as a source of inspiration for images and colours in my own crafting and it's worth every penny. The illustrations are lovely and there's salient information on each of the women illustrators. I love it.

Beautiful book (paperback)
I love this book. This isn't my first Dover book (I have ordered other Dover books). Wonderful, if you are only looking for a book with only the illustrations, because I also collect fairy tale books and I don't want too many books about the same subject.
