Inexpensive FAX Modem
I purchased this FAX Modem for my Windows 7 machine. Newer computers no longer come with FAX Modems, and I occasionally have the need for one. The price (through Amazon) was much less than what the local computer stores were charging.

works with Windows 7 Pro & FaxTalk
This review is for the HiRO V.92 56K Internal PCI Express x1 Data Fax Voice Modem (H50197).I popped this onto an MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard running Windows 7 Pro. I fired up FaxTalk FaxCenter Pro 8 and the modem was recognized. I didn't have to install any drivers. We use this rig at the office to serve as our fax machine and we get about 20 faxes per day. We send out about 1 fax per day.No issues at all. Price is great. Five stars, easy.

HiRO data/fax voice - model H50197
I had a wonderful modem arrangement on old computer, using PCI slots. New motherboard only has PCIe, so trying to recreate what I had with new hardware. I bought two modems for two phone lines; one was to handle fax calls and one was to handle voice. This was the voice modem.Had a lot of trouble getting both modems working at the same time, so I put project aside for a bit. Finally came back to it, uninstalled and physically removed the other modem, and tried to get this one to work to provide telephone answering machine functionality through my PC.The software that accompanies this unit, Phone Tray, is not answering machine software, it is call screening software. It appears that there was discussion of creating "Phone Tray Pro," to add answering machine functionality, but I cannot find that this ever materialized.I tried Call Soft Pro (which looks like a really nice setup), but could not get the greeting to play through the modem, to be heard by the caller. Tried Advanced Call Center Pro, still no luck getting greeting to play (as an aside, I like the Call Soft product a lot better). This failure across two programs that seem to have generally good reputations makes me feel that the issue is the modem, but that is a conclusion on my part.I am willing to pay for software sold separately (although past modems have always included appropriate software; this modem only includes Phone Tray). I just haven't been able to find any that will work with this modem. So if the modem actually IS functional, I guess the flaw might be the absence of included software that would meet my needs. With regard to other features, it does display caller ID. It does answer after the designated number of rings. It does record the incoming message. It just does not play the outgoing greeting. Perhaps if you have a physical answering machine, but want to zap telemarketer calls before they hit your machine, this could be helpful (that's a guess, did not try that kind of setup).I still recognize that this could be a setup issue at my end. If anyone has suggestions (I've tried changing system volume, modem volume, and configuring as serial vs. TAPI), please feel free to comment so others might know what I've done wrong and how to make this work better.I will likely look for another voice modem, ideally with compatible answering machine software included.

Doesn't support CallerID
I got this modem to provide Caller ID information. Conexent-type modems should respond to the command AT+VCID=1 by providing formatted caller name and number information. The modem recognizes the command (it replies "OK") but nevertheless sends only "RING" data. (Caller ID information is being received since it appears on my phone display.) A snail-mail letter to HiRO (no other contact information on their website) was not responded to. If you don't care about this feature the modem may be ok, but it's worthless for Caller ID.

Works
I rarely use a fax but wanted one for occasional needs. This has worked when I have needed a fax.

this replaces the missing Fax / phone line that new HP computers lack
I couldn't believe that my new HP Pavillion didn't come with a phone/fax plug! My techie found this part for me and it was very easy to install as it has a port ready. Now I can have Outlook dial out from my computer with one click.

Works like a charm.
Picked this up to work in conjunction with FaxTalk Messenger Pro 8.0 to run as the office phone's answering machine by daily schedule. We have a second line which is programmed to automatically seek the primary, this way we only needed a modem with single line capability. Works great.

low quality
Bought 2 for two new Dell PCs purchased for work. I tried these two modems in two different pcs in three different slots and they were not recognized. Sent back and purchased 2 US Robotic modems... seamless install.
