ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack - Temperature & Occupancy Detection

I love these ecobee smart sensors. They were very easy to set up and have been extremely helpful for monitoring and controlling the temperature in rooms that often feel colder or warmer than the rest of the home. They make it much easier to keep the house comfortable and balanced. If you use a smart thermostat with your HVAC system, I highly recommend these sensors. They work great, are convenient to use, and have made a noticeable difference in comfort throughout my home.

These have really helped my system. My thermostat is on a wall that is also the return duck going up into the attic. Because of this I have never had correct reading from the thermostat, and I have had two different ones. This one you can change the reading by setting a correction value but this still did not help me. In warmer temps it needed one setting and another in cooler. It was annoying. I got these and placed one in the kitchen and the other in the living room. What I found they do is communicate with the thermostat and they create an average temperature for the house. This has made the readings much more consistent and accurate. I am much happier now and was able to remove the temperature correction from the thermostat. They were extremely easy to set up. The are also small and do not stand out in the room. I have not had any issues with them not picking us up and detect motion well.

The ecobee Smart Sensors hook into the app and ecobee thermostat super easy. Really little to no configurations at all, simply scan the QR code on the sensor and the app finds it and adds it to your thermostat. Not everyone needs additional sensors, but for me this was a must. The only thermostat that is installed is in the ecobee Smart Thermostat and it is installed in an area that does not see people cross its path very often. When it thinks that there is no one home it then stops heating or cooling to save energy (good thing). The bad part is when we don't go past the thermostat it thinks no one is home and the house either gets super cold or very hot until we go past the thermostat or manually adjust in the app. With these little sensors, you can have them in areas that people are in and it registers that someone is home and keeps the Heat or AC running. Some people may say why not turn of the the ability of the thermostat so it just stays on. Well, that defeats the purpose of a smart thermostat, and I do want it to be able to automatically turn the heating off and on if we are really not at home. Overall these are great little sensors and I think very well designed. I'm am pleased with them and happy that I have purchased them.

My four stars are because these work pretty well, but it's frustrating that you need them. Back in 2014, I installed my first Ecobee. I've had a couple since then. They all have the same problem that the thermostat itself gets HOT when it runs the air conditioner. I'll include a tech note below explaining, but the upshot of this is that AC runs for too long and the house gets too cold before the AC shuts off. The easiest way to "fix" this is to use a separate sensor and not rely on the ecobee wall thermostat itself to measure temperature. It's frustrating becuase these thermostats are expensive, Ecobee won't acknowledge this is an issue, and only sells these sensors in 2-packs. The reason I keep buying ecobee is that I haven't yet found another thermostat that has the same features I'm looking for. *Now for the tech note for those mechanically inclined: AC contactors actually require a decent amount of current. This much current draw causes the FETs in the ecobee to heat up. As soon as the Ecobee calls for cooling, the thermostat itself starts getting hot and thus the room has to cool down WAY below the setpoint for the thermostat to register that it's below the setpoint. On my first ecobee, I did extensive measurements and troubleshooting to confirm this behavior. Ecobee wouldn't acknowledge it at all and gave me the runaround. I gave them multi-point time/temperature readings. (I'm a process control engineer, so this actually is my area of expertise) Ultimately, I installed a mechanical relay board which isolated the cooling contactor from the Ecobee and from that point on the thermostat behaved perfectly, with no more overshoots. Heating did not have this same issue because the current draw on calling for heat is minimal.

I bought a house that already had an Ecobee thermostat installed. The previous owner took the smart sensors with him, so I got this 2 pack, 1 for the living room, 1 for the bedroom. They work great! My living room runs hotter then the area the thermostat is in, and my bedroom runs cooler, so this let's the system adjust the temp much better without me having to change any settings. I did have an issue pairing them at first. Removing the thermostat from the wall and putting it back to reboot it solved the issue, and they paired right away.

I have a 2-story 2500 sq. ft. house and my thermostat is downstairs. I have the "Lite" version of the Ecobee thermostats and it was able to sense both sensors even though I activated them from my office upstairs. Easy peasy. They read the temperature perfectly and look aesthetically pleasing, however they are small enough that they could easily get lost or the kid could accidentally play with it. Keep them in a spot that's difficult to reach.

Our home had existing ecobee thermostats installed when we moved in, but no sensors or other accessories. Both units are installed in pretty typical spots in hallways, but we noticed the downstairs always seemed a little warmer than upstairs. The front of the house is south-facing, with big windows in each downstairs front room, and the kitchen also gets a lot of sun on the southwest side of the house. We decided to give these sensors a shot—one in the busier of our two front rooms and one in the kitchen—and the difference has been huge. They display in the app so you can see what temp they’re registering as well as what the thermostat itself is registering, and the two rooms with sensors are consistently 2-3 degrees warmer than what the thermostat thinks the temp is downstairs. The system appears to average them out to properly adjust to cool to the temp you’ve plugged into your thermostat, and it’s made a huge difference in keeping our downstairs cool. I’m a little worried about our utility bill, because the AC is definitely kicking on more often now, especially with recent heat wave temperatures, but keeping our family cool and comfortable is so important. These are extremely easy to set up and place, and they’re both good-looking and discreet. You can easily move them if you’re using them on the included magnetic stands (we may actually move one upstairs to get a better read up there). Definitely buy, especially if you have a larger home and/or multiple stories, and look for sales through ecobee or on holidays on other sites (we got ours on Prime Day).

I added the ecobee Smart Sensor 2-Pack to pair with my Ecobee thermostat, and they honestly make a bigger difference than I expected. Before using the sensors, my thermostat was mainly reacting to the temperature in the hallway. Now it actually pays attention to the rooms people are in, which is how it should work. Setup was simple — each sensor paired quickly through the Ecobee app, and mounting them was easy. They’re compact and look clean on the wall or shelf. Once connected, the sensors help balance temperatures in commonly used rooms, so I’m no longer freezing in one room while the hallway is perfectly comfortable. The occupancy detection works well too; when nobody is in a room, the system doesn’t waste energy trying to keep that space conditioned. What I appreciate most: • Better temperature balance across the house • HVAC doesn’t run as often when no one is home • The app automatically prioritizes “occupied rooms” for comfort • Range has been reliable — no connection drops so far If I had to nitpick, the included stands are very minimal, and battery replacement will be needed eventually. But overall, these sensors are pretty much essential if you already own an Ecobee thermostat. Bottom line: If you want your Ecobee to actually follow where you and your family spend time — not just the hallway thermostat location — this 2-pack is worth it. Better comfort, less wasted energy, and a noticeable upgrade to how “smart” the system feels.

I did not realize it did not reach my thermostat from my bedroom in a two story house. The one in the living room is ok and a great help. I wish I would have known before I purchased. This is a fantastic product, but depending on square footage it may be difficult.
