8.1 MADE EASIER.
This book should help anyone who is new to 8.1. which is different in many ways from the earlier Windows such as XP and Vista. After several weeks I am now very comfortable with doing some things in a different way and enjoying it. I especially liked the fact that the authorgave us the short cuts using the windows key plus various other keys to quickly get around the computer. Working with apps, photos and files are covered in detail..

not a clear understandable direction info
I am a windows 7 user. It was a surprise with the windows 8-1. The book was hard for me to understand and the instruction made no sense to me. I had to hire a computer person to help me to get the computer set up. Unless the buyer is a computer person ( someone who knows the in and out ofa computer) I would't say this is a good learning book.

Only Social Media Concerns
Only good if you're interested in social media, not files, folders and start menu tweaking. This was not even close to what I needed, since I expected similar style to the XP series. If all you need is photos and social media, this book is for you. If you want to know about your start menu, files, folders and other computer related stuff, get something else. I learned more off sites online than this book had to offer, in my case.

Windows 8.1 for Senior Dummies, fast delivery, great shape I'm tickled to death to have it!
I couldn't believe how fast the book got here. I just a bought a refurbished Acer laptop with 8.1 on it and a free upgrade to Windows 10. I couldn't get it to install Windows 10 so I was tickled to have the new book to help me get used to the new OS. Well I pushed install one more time and went to bed. In the morning I had Windows 10 installed. I'm not sure it won't be a problem, so I'm keeping Windows 8.1 for Senior Dummies close at all times

window 8.1 for seniors for dummies
Well I actually ordered this book because I was downloading 8.1 on my computer and I guess I should have ordered the a windows 8 because I uninstalled the 8.1 and went back to windows 8. But I'm sure that I can still look up stuff on this book there can't be that much difference between the 2.

Very instructive.
Well written. The authors have an entertaining style that makes easy to read and follow. A few of the instructions didn't quite work as expected, but that could be a peculiarity of the laptop I am using. Recommended.

Good information, harder to find
While all the information needed is in the book, finding it is not as easy as with other Dummies books I have purchased. There is a lot of assumptions about the readers knowledge that were not in the others.

invaluable reference book
This is perhaps the best laid out and in depth user reference manuals I have had the pleasure to read. The windows 8 operating system release has caused some very mixed reports (plenty of negatives) and I did have some concerns when I upgraded to win 8 with a new computer. This user manual solved all of those issues .This book is Well laid out and I might be wrong but it looks like the print is a little larger, anyway I recommend this reference to all that read this review, Young, or old like me!!!

I would have been lost without it.
In the distant past I have read some of the basic technical books 'for Dummies' and not found them particularly helpful. I also found the 'American feeble jokey' style in which they were written very irritating. So when I had to choose which book to download onto my Kindle in order to come to terms with my new Windows 8.1 computer, I almost rejected this option without further consideration. However, some good reviews persuaded me to use the 'Look inside' feature and it seemed to be written in a much more acceptable form, so I bought it and it is really a great help. Without it I would have been completely bemused by 8.1 after being a Window XP user at a fairly basic level.I have certainly not fully mastered 8.1(which seems much less intuitive than XP) yet or even finished the book, but feel I can safely recommend it to other 'Seniors'. If I had one criticism, it relates to the order in which some of the advice is given. Having transferred all the data from my old computer onto the new one, I didn't know where to find my files and this doesn't seem to be dealt with until the penultimate chapter. However, clicking on the chapter list at the beginning of the book does take you straight to the page selected, which is helpful.Whether it is any better or worse than the other options on the Amazon list, I don't know but, overall, but I think most low-tech users like me will find it very useful.

I'm sure the book will be very useful, just bear in mind
Not too impressed as my husband hasn't been able to find out anything new that he needed to know after upgrading to 8.1. Probably should have bought the original version instead of "For Seniors". For us, this book really earns the title "For Dummies" rather than "For Seniors". He's found out all he needs to know now by searching help topics online. This book will probably just gather dust on the bookshelf. To be fair, if you are new to computing, I'm sure the book will be very useful, just bear in mind, if you are already fairly computer literate, I wouldn't bother with this version.

Reduces some of the pain
Coping with Windows 8.1 for the first time can be a very testing time. The book deals reasonably well with the basics, but it does cover ground which if the reader has experience with Windows 7 etc., gives a feeling of duplication.I wish the book devoted more space to computer back ups and file saving, which would be invaluable to counteract inevitable errors made during the learning process.Windows 8.1 isn't universally accepted as 'user friendly', this book goes part way to improving the friendship.

Essential reading
Delivered in good time. Indispensable if you're new to Windows 8.1. Many things explained in plain language that you would struggle to find out about elsewhere. Saved us a lot of time in getting the new laptop fully functional for what we want. I think younger than seniors would find it useful too.

not bad, but not entirely accurate in the 'for dummies' ...
not bad, but not entirely accurate in the 'for dummies' part of the title. Does not explain everything in words of one syllable, and gives explanations for doing things, which are not the basics needed to master the system.
