Product Description New Tricks: Season 1 (DVD)The BBC drama series adapted from Mary Gaskells classic novels of small town gossip, secrets and romance. 1842. Cranford, a market town in the North West of England, is a place governed by etiquette, custom and above all, an intricate network of ladies. It seems that life has always been conducted according to their social rules, but Cranford is on the cusp of change…]]> .com The premise of New Tricks is irresistible: A career-driven British detective hits a career speedbump and is put in charge of a new cold-case division that she thinks is way out of the spotlight. And if that isn't bad enough, she must build a staff from a raggedy crew of retired cops with loads of time on their hands--as well as, it turns out, some pretty great detective skills they're dying to use again. Supervising the oddball group is the former hotshot Det. Supt. Sandra Pullman (played by Amanda Redman with refreshing world-weariness that gives homage to Helen Mirren's great performance in Prime Suspect), who feels sidelined, and thus frustrated, in this latest assignment. Yet the viewer knows Pullman is perfectionist enough to give this Siberia gig her all, even if her work methods differ wildly from those on her team. Recruited out of various stages of retirement are the deeply gifted English character actors James Bolam (playing recent widower Jack Halford), Alun Armstrong (terrific as the obsessive-compulsive Brian Lane, who left the force after a nervous breakdown), and Dennis Waterman (a former sergeant and hothead who likes his liquor and isn't at all sure about having a lady boss). New Tricks is part police procedural--with a deliciously long running time of 90 minutes per episode--as well as a humorous work dramedy. When Pullman pulls a pile of photos of retired cops from whom to begin to build her team, her first teammate, Halford, grabs the pile to help speed along the process. "Dead, dead, dead, dead, good as, dead…" he says as he winnows down the stack. Yet the "old fart" jokes are few and far between, as it soon becomes clear that the old dogs really can learn, and employ, New Tricks and make dramatic, if sometimes politically dangerous, headway into high profile cases assumed to be long closed. Or are they? Fans of any crime procedural will love New Tricks, as will fans of the far more realistic British TV series that dare to show stars with imperfect teeth or well-worn shoe soles. And yet that realism is part of the utter believability, and totally-grow-on-you charm of New Tricks. --A.T. Hurley

A Motley Cold case Squad from England that gets their man (or woman).
I was pleased when PBS started airing this british detective series. Retired police detectives are hired by the police department to solve COLD CASES.But the real fun is in watching this motley crew work. Like Columbo, they are real geniuses full of quirks, old & seasoned but with more energy than most half their age.If you like quirky detective drama with a few laughs thrown in, then htis is the series for you.Yes, that is Dennis Waterman from the old 1970's British cop series "The Sweeney".Episode #1.0Original Air Date--27 March 2003As punishment for messing up a kidnap rescue and shooting a dog in the process Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman) is assigned to the newly created unsolved murder squad. This is a wonderful opening act for a great series
Take three cranky retired detectives, add in one tough female supercop who's had a little bit of a career hiccup involving a dead dog and you get what is arguably one of the best British police shows ever. The concept is not especially new - "The Over-the-Hill Gang" was, after all, done about 40 years ago in the U.S. - but the execution of this cop show is especially well done because it is (a) brilliantly written, (b) extremely well acted and (c) because the characters are so very, very human. The top cop is Sandra Pullman, who has dedicated her life to her career at the expense of any true relationships. She falls in love with the wrong men and sometimes she drinks too much. One of her detectives has a slightly tarnished past and is a serial womanizer, another talks to his dead wife over a glass of scotch in his garden and the third is a recovering alcoholic who is certain that he is the victim of multiple conspiracies. They do not all get on well at first - in fact there are some classic scenes that show you exactly how badly they get on - but despite their differences and their quirks they do solve crimes that have been filed away as, well, unsolvable by other cops. This first series - including the pilot episode - sets the stage for many brilliant seasons that followed. If you are a fan of British police shows, and I am, you won't find the grittiness that mark some of them but what you will find is some great storytelling acted by some of Great Britain's most accomplished actors.

Good show!
We were familiar with the series but from later shows. We enjoyed seeing how it began. In my effort to get closed caption working we got to hear the theme song too many times. Good series. We enjoyed this season.

Cold cases solved by dedicated, but psychologically impaired retirees
A fast rising female detective inspector runs into a problem' in an otherwise successful raid, she shot a dog. Never mind that it was a guard dog lunging for her, all the public cares about is, she shot a dog! She is shunted into a new position dedicated to cracking cold cases with a squad of retired senior detectives working on contract. Sherlock Holmes, Peter Wimsey and Hercule Poirot they are NOT. In the first episode, we see the hiring interviews. After eliminating the drunks, the racists, the sexists, and those who have heart attacks upon being offered the job, she is left with a trio of detectives of the old school whose methods are not exactly approved by modern courts, and who are all battling their own particular demons from their days on the force. Nonetheless, they generally succeed, although with the unheralded and generally unrecognized assistance of a junior black constable assigned to do a lot of the administrative work.Played with a straight face, but with scripts which go as much for humor as for the mystery. This show has been going on for quite a while. Most of the first season cases seem to derive from the late 70s and early 80s, but at the time of filming they would only have been about 20-25 years old.

I realize the time and effort taken to "fix" used dvds. The quality is like new. I appreciate the response I received from the company. unfortunately I am computer illiterate and don't know how to remove my previous review.

Will not work in the USA
The DVD's sent would not work on USA equipment. Why did Amazon import these DVD's knowing they will not work on USA equipment. Makes them look like amateurs.

Sad this is now cancelled....
This series was one that has been thoroughly enjoyed in our home several times. It had great story lines, some that carried over several series. The stars of the show made it a stellar cast. I was disappointed that it was cancelled. This is a great series for anyone who enjoys an easy to watch but compelling police series. Great British tv!
