Start German with the Michel Thomas Method 1st Edition

I have studied multiple languages using the Michel Thomas method. It is surprisingly effective. I can do it during my commute to work because you aren't supposed to write anything down, look things up, or take notes. It is super convenient. This method has you speaking in full sentences almost immediately, which I still find hard to believe! This program is just a beginner program, however, so you will finish it with some basic communication skills, nothing too advanced. If you will be traveling, I would recommend supplementing your practice by looking up and studying important phrases and words (e.g. numbers, restaurant vocabulary, greetings, etc). This program gives you a good beginning understanding of the structure of the language, which is helpful because you can create more sentences just by learning new vocabulary... you'll already know how to piece the words together and conjugate the verbs.

Michel Thomas does a very good job of explaining the structure of the German language.It takes many listings to the 1 hour CD to be able to understand and begin to use what is presented.The CD is a very good first step.

I enjoy these CDs. They work for me. Listen while I'm on treadmill.

Good beginner set...

Excellent. Perfect logic in the progression of teaching and learning especially the connection to Anglo Saxon roots.The teacher and learners approach is very effective.Would love to know what the next series is.

I love this CD. I was trying to find an easy language to learn. I had heard that German was the closest language to English so I purchased this CD. I really like the way the teacher talks with the two students on the CD. I have been able to retain a lot of what I hear however I do have to play it over and over as I tend to get distracted quite a bit. I also purchased a book to help supplement my audio learning. I hope to learn this language and speak it fluently within a year.

Different than the other language courses and I don't think I was able to grasp this way of teaching as well. But, it was good.

I love it ! I have it playing constantly, when I am alone, in the car. It really does help to teach correct pronunciation, sentence structure and verb endings.Michel is very good with his two pupils, although the male student seems to find it harder to cope with the language. Actually, this is good too, as one can hear the different ways to pronounce individual words. The clever way the sentence structure is developed makes remembering very easy.As each new word is introduced, with its spelling, and gradually linked to other words, our ability to speak whole sentences slowly emerges.I really would recommend it. I am now buying the next box set as this method of learning, alongside traditional methods, is excellent.

Outstanding! I bought this as I wasn't sure if I wanted to part with the cost of the Total German course, and thought it would be a good way to try out this teaching method as I wasn't making much progress with traditional self taught books and CDs.I drive a lot so for me this was perfect. I can listen to them in the car and talk along as much as I like with no one to disturb me. The Michel Thomas method is unique and I couldn't believe how much I had picked up in that first hour. I've since read that his German does indeed sound native, which was reassuring after the attention given to pronunciation on the cd.I ordered the Total German straight after the first listen, safe in the knowledge I will be able to complete it and enjoy it!

In roughly an hour, this CD will teach you your first 50 words of German: almost without you realising it! On the back of this primer CD being so successful, I have bought the successor course.At times, Michel comes across as frustrated with the slow (male) student which is distracting when you're trying to learn and moreover might have made the same mistake! However I assume the entire CD is scripted (or edited) carefully because by the end you're speaking your basic phrases fluently and with confidence.I have given this CD a 4* review when the content probably deserved five stars because I think the price is high for what it is.Remember too that the next box of CDs in the set also include a precis from this CD too.

This appears to be the first CD of the Total German set.If I had known I would not have bought it.

Excellent, as I have dyslexia I found this CD really easy to listen to and remember without concentrating intensely. Found this easy to listen to and take in whilst driving as no need for books to refer to. Michel Thomas comments at the beginning of the CD that there is no need for stress or anxiety as the onus is on him as an instructior and not the pupil, this immediately takes the pressure of you that you must absorb and learn all the information provided first time.
